Avon Victoriana Turquoise Swirl Slag Glass Basin Bowl with Embossed Roses, Marked Avon 31

Quick identification

This is the basin from Avon's Victoriana pitcher and bowl bath set, made in the 1970s. It is a small round bowl of opaque swirled slag glass, turquoise (a milky aqua green) streaked with darker teal, with embossed rose sprays and leafy vines around the outside, a flat outturned rim with an inner ledge, and a flat circular well in the center framed by molded scrolls, where the matching pitcher stands. The base is molded Avon with 31 below. Sellers attribute the glass to Fostoria for Avon, though the mark names only Avon. Avon also sold the set in a bluer shade.

About this item

Avon's Victoriana bath set

Avon sold the Victoriana set as a miniature pitcher and wash basin in swirled slag glass with embossed roses. The pitcher came filled with bath oil or foaming bath oil, and a matching soap dish was also sold. Sellers date the set to the 1970s, with blue versions listed as 1978, and several attribute the glass to Fostoria. When sold, the pitcher stood in the basin's center well.

Detailed visual description

Turquoise swirl basin with embossed roses

The Avon Victoriana basin bowl is the shallow wash-basin half of a miniature pitcher and bowl set. It is pressed opaque glass in a swirled slag or marbled finish: turquoise (a milky aqua green) with lighter white-green areas and thin streaks of darker teal (a deep blue-green) running through it. Flaring out from a narrow foot to a wide, flat, outturned rim, the sides make the bowl look like an old washstand basin in small scale. Its surface is glossy.

Around the outside wall, embossed in relief, are sprays of full-blown roses with buds and veined leaves, linked by thin curling vines and leaf tendrils. Inside, a step or ledge runs just below the rim. The center of the floor is a flat, slightly raised circular well about the size of the pitcher's foot, framed above and below by small molded C-scroll flourishes. Otherwise the inside walls are plain.

Underneath, a low round foot ring encloses a flat base with the mark molded in raised letters at the center: Avon in rounded capitals with the last letter shaped like a lowercase n, matching Avon's logo of the period, and the number 31 in plain digits centered below it. A faint mold line shows on the foot.

On this copy: the bowl was not measured; sellers list the Victoriana basin at about 5 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall. Dust, lint and white residue sit inside, with tan grime packed into the inner ledge and at the foot. The top of the rim has a rough worn patch and a small nick, and the surface shows light scratches. No cracks were seen.
