About this item

Help identify this vase

No signature, acid mark or label was found, and searches of Swedish and other European engraved glass listings did not turn up this design. The thick walls, flat-cut rim and the mix of frosted engraving with polished circle cuts are the best clues. If you know the maker or have a signed example, please add it below.

Detailed visual description

Thick clear vase with a frosted tree and three star-flower lenses

This heavy clear crystal vase with an etched and engraved tree is a tall, thick-walled piece with a flattened almond-shaped (pointed oval) cross-section, so the mouth is an eye-shaped opening and the two broad faces curve gently out. Clear and colorless, the glass takes a faint cool gray tint in the thickest parts. The rim is ground flat and polished, and long vertical facets run down the narrow ends. A very thick solid base gives the vase its weight.

The decoration sits on one broad face. A tall frosted stem or trunk, ground to a soft matte white-gray, rises from a small tuft of pointed clear-cut leaves at the bottom and splits into two branches with angular frosted tops. Sprays of polished, oval leaf cuts (clear, bright against the matte trunk) branch off to the left and right. Above the trunk, three round concave polished lenses (printie or circle cuts) are arranged in a triangle, and each lens is engraved with a fine-line six-petal star flower. Seen through the glass, the motif repeats as a reflection on the back wall, but the back itself is plain.

Underside: flat and polished, with the almond shape of the interior well visible through the thick base. No signature, acid stamp, etched mark or maker's label was found on the base or sides. Without a mark, the maker stays open. The thick walls, flat-cut rim and wheel-cut and engraved decoration are in the style of mid-century European art glass, but no source matching this design was found.

On this copy: not measured; the opening is about the width of an adult hand, and the vase looks roughly 8 to 9 inches tall. The base has many fine scratches from use, the inside bottom has a white haze or mineral residue, and a torn paper sticker remains on the inside wall. No chips were seen on the rim.

Questions

About the Heavy Etched Crystal Oval Vase

How do I identify an unsigned heavy crystal vase like this?

Check the base closely under a light for a faint engraved signature or acid-etched mark, then compare the cut and engraved motif with signed examples from Scandinavian and Czech makers. On this vase no mark was found, so the motif is the main clue.

Is this vase Orrefors or Kosta?

Not confirmed. No Orrefors, Kosta or other mark was found, and no matching design turned up in searches of their engraved vases.

What are the round polished circles on the vase?

They are concave lens cuts, also called printies or circle cuts, ground and polished into the glass. Each one here is engraved with a fine-line six-petal star flower.
