Silver cross box crowded with pearls and rhinestones
The Nikky pearl and rhinestone cross trinket box is a small jeweled box in the shape of a Latin cross, with a longer lower arm, made of cast metal plated silver-tone (a soft, slightly warm silver). Two parts make up the box: a shallow cross-shaped base with straight walls and a matching lift-off lid that sits on top. Both pieces are lined inside with cream enamel (a pale yellowish ivory).
The lid is an openwork metal grid set with stones over its whole top surface. At the center of the cross sits the largest piece, a big round faux pearl. Around it are smaller round and oval faux pearls in white (a creamy pearl white) set in raised bezels, clear rhinestones in round collet settings from tiny to about pearl size, and small domed bosses enameled ivory (a warm cream) with a single tiny rhinestone set in the center of each. Packed tightly with small gaps between them, the stones let light show through the lid. Each arm ends in a square cut. Underneath, the lid is cream enamel with the openings showing through.
Turned over, the base is plain silver-tone metal cast with fine lines radiating out from the center like a sunburst, running the full length of every arm. At the center is the maker's crest in raised relief: a shield shape holding a tall serif capital N, flanked by curled scrolls on each side, sitting above a curved banner or cartouche with NIKKY in small block capitals.
On this copy: about the length of an adult palm, not measured. The pearl coating has flaked on the large center pearl and on several smaller pearls, showing the white bead underneath. At least three of the enamel bosses are missing their tiny center rhinestones, leaving empty holes. In places the ivory enamel is yellowed and grimy, the cream lining of the base has dark stains and smudges, and the silver-tone plating is worn on edges, with lint caught between the stones.
