Detailed visual description

Putty beige safe with a chrome dial plate

The vintage Sentry combination safe by John D. Brush & Co. is a small floor-standing fire safe: an upright steel box, slightly taller than wide, with well-rounded vertical corners and edges. It is painted beige, a putty or stone off-white, in a fine textured finish. A single front door fills almost the whole face, set inside a narrow frame of the body. It hangs on two exposed barrel hinges on the right side, painted to match, with domed pin caps. A low recessed plinth with bolt heads runs under the front.

On the left of the door is a chrome lever handle, a straight squared bar that turns to throw the bolts. To its right is a square escutcheon plate of brushed aluminum with a raised frame edge. The plate carries the combination dial: a chrome dial ring with fine graduations numbered 0 to 90 in tens, a fluted chrome knob, and a center cap in blue, a bright metallic electric blue. A small triangle above the dial marks the index.

The maker's badge sits at the top of the plate, a mirror-foil label with the logo in blue. On the left is an emblem shaped like a tall arched doorway outlined in blue, filled with red and white diagonal stripes, with a white silhouette of a standing guard in the center. Beside it, sentry is written in heavy, rounded lowercase letters in royal blue with a small registered mark. Under both, in small blue block capitals, runs JOHN D. BRUSH & CO. INC., ROCHESTER, NEW YORK U.S.A.

On this copy: the safe was not measured. The paint has rust spotting and brown staining across the door and top, worn spots on the edges and dirt at the base. Scratches mark the aluminum plate and badge. Neither the model number plate nor the inside was photographed.
