Vintage Ceramic Rooster Utensils with Wood Handles: Funnel, Spouted Ladle and Pierced Skimmer, Marked PATENT
This is a set of vintage ceramic rooster kitchen utensils with turned blond wood handles: a cone funnel with a tube spout, a round ladle with a pouring lip and a flat pierced skimmer. Each white glazed head has the same raised, hand-painted folk-art rooster with a glossy black head and curled tail, a lemon yellow breast with black arrow strokes, a burgundy comb and wattle and striped tan legs; the skimmer's drain holes pass through the painting. The only mark is PATENT, hand painted in black capitals on the ceramic collars. Maker, country and date are unidentified.

Rooster utensils marked only PATENT
These pieces carry no maker's name, only the word PATENT painted on the ceramic collar of each head. Similar rooster ladle and slotted spoon sets with wood handles turn up on eBay listed as unbranded vintage kitchenware.
Three white ceramic utensils painted with a black and yellow rooster
These vintage ceramic rooster kitchen utensils are a three-piece set: a funnel, a small round ladle with a pouring lip and a flat pierced skimmer. Each head is white, a glossy creamy white, glazed ceramic with a short ceramic collar that takes a turned wood handle in blond, a light natural beech tone. The handles are long and slim, swelling toward a rounded knob end with a turned groove.
Each head carries the same stylized folk-art rooster, raised slightly from the surface and painted by hand. The head, neck and big curled tail are black, a glossy jet black; the plump breast is yellow, a bright lemon yellow, marked with small black arrow-shaped feather strokes; the comb and wattle are red, a deep burgundy or wine red; the beak is yellow and the eye is a white or brown dot ringed in black. Its legs are tan with black stripes and spread toes. On the skimmer the rooster fills the round head and the drain holes, about fourteen of them, are punched right through the painting. On the ladle the rooster is painted inside the bowl, and on the funnel it is painted on the outside of the cone.
The ladle is a shallow round cup with a pinched pouring lip on one side, and the funnel is a deep cone with a short round tube spout. Each head is plain white on the back. PATENT is hand painted in black, slightly uneven block capitals on the ceramic collar of the pieces where the handle meets the head. No maker's name or country mark was seen.
On this copy: sizes not measured; the skimmer head fits in the palm of a hand. The glaze is crazed, most clearly on the back of one head, with brown and rust-colored spots and stains, a few small glaze flakes on the skimmer, and grime at the collars. As for the wood, the handles are dry with light wear and stains at the ends.

What does PATENT mean on my ceramic rooster ladle?
It is painted on the ceramic collar where the wood handle fits and is the only mark on these pieces. It names no maker or patent number, so it does not identify who made them.
Who made ceramic rooster utensils with wood handles?
These are unmarked apart from PATENT. Similar sets are sold as unbranded, and no maker has been confirmed for this rooster design.
How do I tell if my rooster utensils match this set?
Look for the same raised rooster with a black head and curled tail, a lemon yellow breast with black arrow strokes, a burgundy comb, striped tan legs, and PATENT in black on the collar.
Is a vintage ceramic rooster utensil set valuable?
Similar rooster ladle and spoon sets in the batch comps were listed on eBay at about $6 and $14.
