Tall Clear Paneled Glass Spaghetti Jar with Glass Lid, Rubber Gasket and Wire Bail Clamp

Quick identification

A tall clear glass spaghetti jar, a pasta storage canister with flat vertical panels (about a dozen) that taper slightly toward a flat many-sided base. A short round neck with molded ribs holds a flat round glass lid with a raised center ring, sealed by an off-white rubber gasket and clamped by a galvanized wire bail with a lever. No embossed maker name, capacity or country mark appears on it, so the maker is unknown. Similar bail-lid jars from makers such as Bormioli Rocco (Fido) usually carry embossed brand marks, which this jar lacks.

Detailed visual description

Tall clear paneled jar with a wire bail clamp lid

This tall clear paneled glass spaghetti jar with a wire bail lid is a long, narrow storage canister made to hold dry spaghetti standing upright. The body is clear glass, colorless with a faint gray-green cast in the thick parts, and is formed of flat vertical panels (about a dozen) that run from the shoulder to the base, giving it a faceted, many-sided outline. It tapers slightly, a little wider at the top than at the foot. Closing it is a flat glass lid pressed down by a hinged wire bail, the clamp-top style often called a bail jar, hermetic jar or swing-top canister.

Top: above the paneled body, a short round neck with molded horizontal ribs leads up to a smooth round rim. The lid is a flat, round clear glass disc with a raised ring molded in its center on top. Between lid and rim sits a flat rubber gasket ring, off-white, a pale cream. Metal fittings are plain wire, gray, a dull galvanized steel. One wire loop holds the lid, and a bent lever loop on the opposite side hooks onto a wire band around the neck. Pulling the lever up releases the lid, which then swings back on its hinge.

Bottom: the base is flat and follows the many-sided panel outline, with a smooth, slightly thickened center. No embossed maker name, logo, capacity number or country of origin was seen on the base, lid or panels in these photos.

On this copy: the jar is about as tall as a forearm, roughly 12 to 13 inches by comparison with the hand in photo 5 (not measured). Inside, the jar is dirty, with dried brown residue on the walls and a ring of white mineral or soap deposit on the inside of the base. The gasket is yellowed and dusty, the lid top is dusty, and the wire bail is dull gray with light oxidation. No chips or cracks were seen.

Questions

About the Tall Glass Spaghetti Jar, Wire Bail Lid

What is a tall glass jar with a wire clamp lid used for?

This shape is a spaghetti or pasta jar. It is tall enough to hold long dry pasta standing up, and the wire bail presses the glass lid onto a rubber gasket to keep the contents dry.

Who made my glass spaghetti jar with the bail lid?

This jar has no embossed name, logo or country mark, so the maker is unknown. Many housewares brands sold similar jars.

Can I replace the gasket on a bail top jar?

Yes. The flat rubber ring lifts off the lid. Replacement gaskets are sold by size, so measure the lid's diameter. The gasket on this jar is yellowed with age.

What is a vintage glass spaghetti jar worth?

A similar tall paneled bail-lid jar was listed on eBay at $36. We have no confirmed sale for this exact jar.
