How to read porcelain marks
- Backstamp first: turn the piece over. The mark on the base usually names the maker and often the country, which helps date it.
- Country name: a country name in the mark usually means the piece was made for export after 1891.
- Hand painted or printed: look closely at a flower or face. A grid of tiny dots means a printed transfer. Brush strokes mean hand painting.
- Check the high points: chips and repairs show up on fingers, petals, feet and rims. Run a fingertip over them.
