About this item

A battery talking toothbrush from Helm Toy

Helm Toy sold this Mickey Talking Toothbrush under license from Walt Disney Productions, with the base made in Hong Kong. The Walt Disney Productions copyright line was used until Disney changed its corporate name to The Walt Disney Company on February 6, 1986, so the mark points to a design made before then.

Detailed visual description

A pie-eyed Mickey standing on a white talking base

The Helm Toy Mickey Mouse Talking Toothbrush is a battery bathroom toy: a molded plastic Mickey Mouse figure standing on a white, a slightly creamy white, two-step plastic base, with a yellow battery toothbrush handle that fits in his outstretched hand and a matching yellow cup. Mickey is drawn in the vintage pie-eyed style, with black pie-cut eyes, a long white muzzle and a black ball nose.

Mickey stands with his feet apart in yellow, a bright lemon yellow, shoes, wearing red, a glossy cherry red, shorts with two white oval buttons on the front. His body, arms and big round ears are black, a glossy jet black. He wears white gloves; his left hand rests flat on his chest, and his right arm reaches out with an open hand that grips the toothbrush handle. His mouth is open in a wide smile showing a red tongue. The toothbrush handle is a yellow tapered tube with a red ribbed button on the side and two prongs at the end with a metal clip where a brush head attaches. No brush head is present. Ribbed bands circle the yellow cup near the rim.

The front of the base carries a white paper label: a small black and white Mickey brushing his teeth at the left, MICKEY in tilted red outlined capitals, TALKING TOOTHBRUSH in two lines of bold blue serif capitals, and © WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS in tiny black capitals under the Mickey picture. On the top step, a round ring knob with a crossbar turns between ON and OFF, molded into the plastic beside it. Around back, the base has two groups of vertical speaker slots, and Mickey's back has small holes. Underneath, raised capitals are molded in four lines: "MANUFACTURED IN HONG KONG / EXCLUSIVELY FOR HELM TOY" / © WALT DISNEY PRODUCTIONS / PATENT NO. 4285151.

On this copy: size not measured. The toothbrush head is missing. Overall the plastic is scuffed and dusty, the black paint on Mickey's head is rubbed in spots, the label is lightly soiled, and there is grime on the base. Whether it still talks was not tested.
