Turning the side crank plays a tune until the lid springs open and Mickey pops up.
Yellow toy upright piano with Mickey popping out of an orange lid
The 1975 Gabriel Mickey Mouse Busy Pop-Up Piano is a hard plastic musical jack-in-the-box shaped like a small upright piano. Its case is yellow, a bright lemon yellow, while the hinged lid, back panel and side crank are orange, a vivid pumpkin orange. When the lid opens, a molded Mickey Mouse figure rises up behind the keyboard as if he is about to play.
Mickey is shown from the waist up with black ears and hair, a flesh-colored face with painted eyes, a black nose and a red smile, a blue jacket over a white shirtfront, a red bow tie and white gloved hands resting on the top of the piano. The front carries a printed paper label on a sky blue background: MICKEY MOUSE in large yellow block capitals with a dark outline across the top, BUSY POP-UP PIANO in small white capitals at the left, and Donald Duck playing a ukulele, Goofy, and Mickey singing from an open green songbook marked SONGS, with musical notes around them. At lower right is the Gabriel logo, a black slanted lowercase Gabriel with a registered mark over orange and blue stripes in a white box, and a tiny Walt Disney Productions copyright line. Below the label is a printed keyboard of cream and black keys. Scrolled side panels, turned columns under the keyboard, three small molded pedals and a crank handle on the right side finish the case.
The orange back panel is molded in raised relief with Mickey dressed as a jester in a pointed cap and ruffled collar, arms out, over the words Disney TOY in big rounded bubble letters, with musical notes scattered around and a small Walt Disney Productions copyright mark. A lower band reads MUSICAL PIANO / JACK IN THE BOX in raised block capitals, with the patent and 1975 Gabriel Industries copyright lines in smaller capitals below. Underneath it is open yellow plastic, with molded ribs and cutouts for the feet.
On this copy: no measurements were taken. The plastic is clean with light scuffs, the paper front label and printed keys are lightly yellowed with small wear spots, and Mickey's nose and face paint show slight rubbing. Lid, crank and pop-up figure are all present. Whether the music box still plays was not recorded.
