Paden City Pottery Manhattan Plate, Pink Cosmos Floral Decal, Marked Manhattan P.C.P. Co. K 33
This is a Paden City Pottery (Paden City, West Virginia) plate in the Manhattan line, identified by its backstamp "Manhattan / P.C.P.Co. / K 33". It is cream earthenware with a softly scalloped edge, a wide flat rim and a thin silver-gray rim line. A floral spray decal sits in the lower half of the well: a large pink cosmos, a yellow pansy-like flower, a pale yellow poppy, a purple anemone, a pink bud and blue forget-me-nots with green and blue-gray leaves. Manhattan was a 1930s Paden City line, and the 33 in the mark likely refers to 1933. The photographed copy also has a "Second Selection" factory seconds stamp.

Paden City Pottery's Manhattan line
P.C.P. Co. stands for Paden City Pottery Co., a dinnerware maker in Paden City, West Virginia, that operated from 1914 to 1953. Manhattan was one of its 1930s lines, marked Manhattan with the P.C.P. Co. initials, and like many Paden City lines it was decorated with decals. Pieces carry a letter and number code under the mark, and the 33 on this plate likely points to 1933.
Cream scalloped plate with a pink cosmos flower spray
The Paden City Pottery Manhattan floral plate is a round earthenware dinner or luncheon plate in cream, a warm ivory cream, with a softly scalloped edge that rises and dips in shallow curves with small notches between them. A wide, flat rim (marly) surrounds a shallow, flat-bottomed well. A thin metallic line, silver that reads gray, a platinum-like gray, follows the outer edge.
Front to back: the only decoration on the face is a decal floral spray placed in the lower half of the well, curving from the left side to the lower right, while the rim and upper well stay plain. From left to right it shows a pale yellow poppy, a soft lemon cream, topped by blue-gray, a slate blue, leaf sprays; a purple anemone, a deep violet purple; a small pink bud; a yellow pansy-like flower, a greenish golden yellow, with a dark red center; and the largest bloom, a pink cosmos, a dusty rose pink with deeper magenta streaks and a yellow-green center. A cluster of blue forget-me-nots, a periwinkle blue, hangs below, and feathery leaves in green, a fresh leaf green, fan out on the right, with silhouette leaves in blue-gray behind the main flowers.
On the underside the glaze is plain cream, with a low foot ring. The backstamp sits left of center, printed in dark green-black: the word Manhattan in a slanted handwritten script with a large looping capital M, P.C.P.Co. in small spaced capitals with periods underneath, and K 33 in small bold capitals below that.
On this copy: not measured. Heavy crazing (a fine web of cracks in the glaze) covers the front and back, with some light yellow discoloration in the well, and the silver rim line is worn and broken in places. A second stamp sits right of center on the back: Second Selection in a slanted script, with leafy scroll ornaments after Second and before Selection (seen on 1 copy). This marks the plate as a factory second. No chips are visible in the photos.

About the Manhattan P.C.P. Co. Floral Plate
What does P.C.P. Co. mean on the back of my plate?
It stands for Paden City Pottery Co., a dinnerware company in Paden City, West Virginia, that made dishes from 1914 to 1953. Manhattan above the initials is the name of the line.
What does K 33 mean on a Manhattan P.C.P. Co. plate?
It appears to be a production code. Other Manhattan pieces are reported with H 33 and F 33, so the number likely stands for 1933 and the letter varies. What the letter means has not been confirmed.
What does 'Second Selection' stamped on a dish mean?
It means the factory graded the piece as a second, a piece with minor flaws sold at a lower price instead of being marked as first quality.
How do I identify my Paden City Pottery pattern?
Read the backstamp first: the word above P.C.P. Co. is the line name, such as Manhattan, Regina or Sally Paden. Then compare the decal flowers and rim treatment with listings of that line, since Paden City used several decals on each shape.
