Green Airbrushed Band Restaurant Ware Grapefruit Bowl, Grease Pencil Note "Seville Grape Fruit 1175"

Quick identification

This is an unmarked restaurant ware (hotel china) grapefruit bowl: heavy white vitrified china with a wide flat rim, a soft-edged airbrushed green band on the outer rim, a deep round well, a molded step ring and a glazed foot ring. It is unidentified, maker unknown, with no backstamp. The photographed copy carries green grease pencil writing on the rim reading "1:1 Seville grape fruit -1175- 434? -6m 9:30". Homer Laughlin used Seville as the name of a restaurant china shape, so the note may record a shape and item, but that is not confirmed. Many restaurant china makers sold green band ware.

About this item

Help identify this bowl

Grapefruit bowls are a standard restaurant china shape: a deep well inside a wide rim, used for grapefruit halves, fruit cups and cereal. The word Seville in the pencil note may refer to Homer Laughlin's Seville restaurant shape, but the bowl itself carries no backstamp to confirm it. If you know the maker or what the numbers mean, please add it below.

Detailed visual description

Heavy white wide-rim bowl with an airbrushed green band

This green band restaurant ware grapefruit bowl is a heavy, deep round bowl set into a wide flat rim, so it looks like a small soup plate with an extra-deep center. It is thick vitrified hotel china in white, a warm glossy off-white, decorated with one airbrushed green band, a soft sage to mint green, around the outer part of the rim.

Front to back: the green band covers roughly the outer half of the rim and its inner edge is soft and fuzzy, the mark of a sprayed (airbrushed) band rather than a printed or hand-lined one. Inside the band the rest of the rim is plain white. A raised molded ring steps down from the rim into the well, and the well has rounded sides and a flat center. There is no other decoration, logo or restaurant name on the face.

Underneath, the bowl is plain glossy white with a molded step under the rim and a tall round foot ring, glazed, with a flat glazed center inside the ring. No backstamp, maker's name, date code or country mark was found.

On this copy: not measured. Someone has written a note in green, a pale green grease pencil (china marker), in small handwritten lowercase and numbers around the inner white part of the rim: 1:1 Seville grape fruit -1175- 434? -6m 9:30, with the last digit of the second number unclear, 4 or 6 (seen on 1 copy). It looks like an inventory, sample or test note added after firing. The glaze has no visible chips or cracks. Dark specks and dust sit in the well, with a few dark flecks on the green band and small brown spots under the foot ring, which may be dirt or iron specks in the glaze.

Questions

About the Green Band Restaurant Ware Grapefruit Bowl

How do I identify unmarked restaurant ware like this green band bowl?

Check the underside for a backstamp or a date code first. When there is none, compare the shape (rim width, foot ring, molded rings) and the band color and width with marked pieces from makers such as Homer Laughlin, Shenango, Syracuse and Buffalo. This bowl has no backstamp, so it remains unidentified.

What does 'Seville grape fruit 1175' written on my bowl mean?

It is a handwritten grease pencil note, not a factory mark. Seville is the name of a Homer Laughlin restaurant china shape, so it may describe a Seville shape grapefruit bowl, with the numbers possibly being an order, item or test number. This is not confirmed.

What is a grapefruit bowl in restaurant china?

It is a deep round bowl with a wide flat rim, made to hold a grapefruit half or a serving of fruit or cereal. Restaurant supply catalogs still sell grapefruit bowls under that name.
