Vintage Copper Tea Kettle with Riveted Swing Handle, Turned Wood Grip, Domed Lid and Wide Flared Base

Quick identification

This is a vintage copper tea kettle with a round bell-shaped body on a wide stepped, flared base, a short gooseneck spout and a low domed lid with a steam hole near one edge. A flat copper strap swing handle pivots on riveted lugs and carries a spool-shaped turned wood grip with a center groove, bolted at each end. The inside and lid underside are tin lined. No maker's mark was seen on the sides, lid or handle, and the base was not photographed, so the maker, age and country are unidentified.

About this item

An unmarked copper kettle

No maker's stamp shows on the parts photographed, and the base was not photographed. Copper kettles with a strap swing handle and a turned wood grip were sold by several makers; marked examples on the resale market include Portuguese kettles such as one stamped Douro B&M Made in Portugal. A stamp on the base, if there is one, is the best way to pin this one down.

Detailed visual description

A round copper kettle with a turned wood swing handle

This vintage copper tea kettle has a round, bell-shaped body that widens toward the bottom and sits on a broad, stepped base skirt that flares out past the body. The metal is copper, a warm reddish copper where it shows at the rims, under a dull brassy or olive-tan surface film. It has a short curved gooseneck spout, a low domed lid and a tall swing handle with a wood grip.

The lid is a shallow dome with a straight copper collar that drops into the neck, and a small raised boss near one edge is pierced with a steam hole. Bent into an arch, the swing handle is a flat copper strap that pivots on two riveted lugs: each lug is a shaped plate fixed to the shoulder of the kettle with rivets, with a round pivot pin. Its grip is turned wood, brown, a reddish walnut stain, shaped like a spool with a narrow groove at the center that makes it look like two pieces, and it is held by a bolt through each end. Seamless-looking, the spout tapers to a pointed lip.

Inside, the kettle and the underside of the lid are lined with a silver-gray metal, the tin lining used in copper cookware. Under the lid is a raised central boss with a hole through it. The spout opening is a single round hole in the wall. No maker's mark, stamp or country of origin was seen on the sides, lid or handle; the underside of the base was not photographed.

On this copy: size not measured. The outside is covered in dust and a dull tarnished film, with copper showing at the lid collar and rims. On the handle strap are dark spots and wear, and the wood grip is dry and faded. Inside there is white mineral scale, a green verdigris spot, rust-brown flakes and dried leaf debris. No dents or holes in the body were seen.

Questions

About the Vintage Copper Tea Kettle, Wood Handle

Who made my copper tea kettle with a wood handle?

This one shows no maker's mark on the sides, lid or handle. Check the underside of the base and the inside of the handle lugs for a stamp; a marked example sold online, a Douro B&M kettle from Portugal, carries its mark on the body.

Can I still use an old tin-lined copper kettle?

Copper kettles are lined with tin so water does not sit on bare copper. This one has scale and a verdigris spot inside, so the lining should be cleaned and checked for worn-through areas before any use.

How do I tell if a kettle is solid copper or copper plated?

Look at worn edges and rims: solid copper shows the same reddish metal all the way through, while plating wears to a different metal underneath. On this kettle the rims and lid collar show reddish copper.
