Mary And Her Little Lamb Japan Figurine, Hummel-Style Girl in Red Skirt Holding a Lamb

Quick identification

This is a Hummel-style porcelain figurine titled "Mary And Her Little Lamb" in handwritten black script on the underside, with a navy and white JAPAN paper label beside a round vent hole. It shows a blonde girl with a powder blue bow on her head and orange-red bows on her pigtails, wearing a green blouse and a terracotta red skirt painted with cross-hatched patches, hugging a white and gray lamb with a red collar tag. Orange flowers rise from the oval base. Maker unknown: no company name or mold number appears. The plain JAPAN mark, not 'Occupied Japan', suggests export production after 1952. It is not a Goebel M.I. Hummel.

About this item

A Japanese Hummel-style export figurine

After World War II, Japanese factories made large numbers of inexpensive porcelain figurines for the American market, many copying the look of German Hummel figures. Pieces made during the occupation were marked 'Occupied Japan' until April 28, 1952; later pieces were usually marked simply JAPAN, often on a paper label like this one.

Detailed visual description

Girl hugging a lamb on an oval flowered base

The "Mary And Her Little Lamb" Japan figurine is a standing porcelain figure of a little girl hugging a lamb in both arms, made in the Hummel style that Japanese factories copied for export. She stands on a low oval base. Mostly matte, the finish is a soft bisque-like surface with painted color, and the face has a pink blush on the cheeks.

Front to back: her hair is blonde, a pale yellow-green blonde, with a bow on top of her head in blue (a pale powder blue shading to lavender) and two short pigtails tied with bows in orange (a bright orange-red). She wears a green blouse (a medium leaf green) with short puffed sleeves and molded ribbing, and a red skirt (a brick or terracotta red) painted with darker red cross-hatched patch marks on the front, sides and back. A tied apron bow is molded at the back of the waist. Her legs have white knee socks with tan bands and dark gray shoes. The lamb is white shaded with gray, with a pink nose, black eyes, black hooves and a red tag at its collar. Orange flowers with dark centers and green leaves rise from the base beside both of her feet.

Underneath, the base is glazed white and hollow, with a round vent hole in the center. Above the hole the title "Mary And Her Little Lamb" is handwritten in black, in a looping cursive script inside quotation marks. At the left edge of the base is a small rectangular paper label reading JAPAN in white block capitals on a dark navy band, framed by a pale yellow border with a dark outline.

On this copy: the figure was not measured; the oval base is about the width of a palm in the underside photo. No breaks were seen. Light grime and a few dark specks sit on the hair and face, with some paint rubbing on the high points of the bow and lamb, yellow staining on the underside, and loose green fibers left from felt that was once glued to the base.

Questions

About the Mary and Her Little Lamb Figurine, Japan

Is my Mary And Her Little Lamb figurine a Hummel?

No. Genuine M.I. Hummel figures were made by Goebel in Germany and carry Goebel marks and a mold number. This piece is marked only with a JAPAN paper label and a handwritten title, so it is a Japanese Hummel-style figurine.

How do I identify who made a Japan figurine with only a paper label?

Look for a printed or stamped company name (such as Napco, Lefton or Enesco), a mold number or a second foil sticker. This piece shows none of those, so its maker is unknown.

How old is a figurine with a JAPAN label?

A plain JAPAN mark usually means it was made after April 1952, when the 'Occupied Japan' marking ended. The style of this piece fits the 1950s to 1960s.
