Vintage Blue Quilted Ceramic Baby Nursery Planter with Ruffled Collar, Dancing Teddy Bears and Handle
A vintage baby blue ceramic nursery planter shaped like a lidless mug with a loop handle. It is molded all over as a tufted quilt with a diamond stitch grid and star-shaped tufts, and a gathered ruffle under the rim. Two honey-brown teddy bears with white muzzles dance in relief on a strip of green grass, with a small pink tulip at the left. Nursery planters like this held florist arrangements for a new baby. The maker is unidentified; the underside was not photographed and no matching marked example was found.

A new-baby planter
Ceramic planters molded with cradles, lambs and teddy bears were used by florists for new-baby arrangements; one Napco pink teddy bear planter still carries a Memphis florist's label. Blue versions are usually sold today as baby boy planters. This one has not been matched to a maker or catalog number, and its underside was not photographed. Baby blue quilted pot with two dancing teddy bears
This blue quilted teddy bear nursery planter is a round, slightly bulging ceramic pot shaped like a lidless mug, with a loop handle on one side. It is glazed glossy blue all over, a soft baby blue to light sky blue, inside and out. The body is molded as a puffy tufted quilt: a diamond grid of stitched lines with small star-shaped tufts where the lines cross. Just under the plain rolled rim, a gathered ruffle or pleated collar runs all the way around, as if the quilt were tied off like a bag.
On the front, two teddy bears stand out in relief, painted honey brown (a warm golden tan) with darker brown shading in the fur, small black dot eyes and white muzzles. The larger bear is mid-dance with one arm up and one leg kicked out; the smaller bear, closer to the handle, holds its paws to its chest as it steps forward. Both stand on a strip of green (a soft leaf green) grass along the bottom edge, and a small pink (a rosy salmon pink) tulip bud peeks up at the far left. In the same blue, the handle is a plain open loop, joined below the ruffle and near the base.
Inside, the glaze is the same light blue. The underside was not photographed, so any mark, sticker or foot ring detail is unknown; the existing note that no mark was seen could not be checked against a photo.
On this copy: not measured. The interior glaze is heavily crazed with dark lines. Small white chips or glaze flakes sit on the rim and ruffle, and white flecks show where paint is worn on the bears' muzzles, paws and bodies. No cracks through the body were seen.
