A bathroom novelty
Miniature clawfoot tub soap dishes were sold as cottage and Victorian-style bathroom decor. This one has no mark, so its maker and country are not known.
Cream mini clawfoot tub soap dish with a flower garland
This cream ceramic clawfoot bathtub soap dish is a small molded earthenware soap holder shaped like an old-fashioned slipper bathtub, with one end rising higher than the other, a thick rolled rim and four short feet. Glazed all over in white, a warm cream to ivory white, it has a glossy finish and fine crazing in the glaze.
Inside, the flat floor has three raised parallel ridges that hold the soap up out of the water. A tiny molded faucet or tap sits on the rim at the low end. Outside, a row of raised beads runs just under the rim, followed by a garland of raised five-petal flowers and small leaves strung in swags around the tub, and a band of vertical fluting (gadrooning) around the lower body. Each corner stands on a short, scrolled clawfoot or paw shape.
The underside is glazed, with a large oval drain hole cut through the center so water runs out. On the four feet, the bottoms are left unglazed, showing a pale cream clay body. No maker's mark, stamp, sticker or country of origin was found on the base or anywhere else.
On this copy: it is roughly 6 inches long, judged against a hand (not measured). Two or more feet are chipped, showing bare clay, and there are small glaze flakes on the beading and garland, light crazing throughout, a little yellowed residue in the crevices, and light surface wear inside. No cracks through the body are visible.
