Vintage Olive Avocado Green Glass Serving Bowl, Round with Thick Walls, Seed Bubbles and a Raised Foot Ring
A large, plain round serving or salad bowl in transparent olive avocado green glass. It has thick walls, gently curved sides, a smooth rounded rim that looks dark olive edge-on, and a short straight-sided foot ring whose resting edge is matte and frosted. The glass holds many tiny seed bubbles and has a slightly wavy look. No pattern, cutting, decoration or maker mark appears on it. Unidentified, maker unknown. It differs from the common 1960s and 1970s Anchor Hocking avocado bowls, which are usually pressed with textured patterns such as Soreno ripples, while this one is smooth and plain.

Olive and avocado green glass
Avocado green glass was common in American kitchens of the 1960s and 1970s, and makers like Anchor Hocking sold pressed avocado bowls with textured patterns such as Soreno. This bowl is smooth and plain with seed bubbles in the glass, so it does not match those pressed lines and its maker and age are not known.
Olive green glass bowl with a raised foot ring
This vintage olive avocado green glass serving bowl is a large, plain, round bowl with gently curved sides that rise from a small raised foot ring to a wide open mouth. The glass is green, a yellowish olive or avocado green, fully transparent, and thick enough that the rim edge looks dark olive, almost black, when seen edge-on. Nothing is cut, patterned or painted on it. In size and depth, it is what is usually sold as a salad bowl or serving bowl.
Plain, smooth and rounded, the rim has no bead or flare. The walls are smooth inside and out, with a slightly wavy, uneven look in the glass and many tiny trapped air bubbles (seed bubbles) scattered through it, visible in close-up. Inside, the center floor is flat and round, outlined by the brighter green ring of the foot below. Seen from above, the foot ring makes a clear circle about a third of the bowl's width.
Underneath, the bowl stands on a short, straight-sided, thick foot ring. The resting edge of the foot is matte and frosted looking, with a sparkly rough texture consistent with grinding or long use, and the recessed center inside the ring is smooth glass. No maker mark, mold number or paper label was seen on the base or sides.
On this copy: the bowl measures roughly 9 to 10 inches across and about 4 inches tall, judged against a hand in photo 4 (not measured). The glass is dusty, with light surface scratches, and the rim has small rough dark spots that may be flea-bite nicks. A thin wandering dark line runs down from the rim on one side in photos 2 and 3, and a jagged line shows in the wall in photo 6. It could be a hairline crack or a reflection, and it should be checked in hand before use (seen on 1 copy).

About the Avocado Green Glass Serving Bowl
How do I identify an unmarked green glass bowl?
Check the base for a mold number, acid mark or sticker, and look at the surface. Pressed American bowls from the 1960s and 1970s usually have a molded texture or pattern. This bowl is plain and smooth with tiny bubbles in the glass and no mark, so its maker is still unknown.
Is my avocado green glass bowl hand blown?
Many tiny bubbles, a slightly wavy surface and a ground or rough foot ring can point to hand-blown or recycled glass, but none of these prove it. This bowl has the bubbles and a frosted foot edge, and no pontil mark was seen.
Who made avocado green glass in the 1970s?
Avocado green was a popular kitchen color then, and makers such as Anchor Hocking sold pressed avocado glass bowls, often with ripple or other textures. This plain bowl has not been matched to any of them.
