Pair of Clear Glass Bud Vases with Brushed Chartreuse Yellow Bands, Gold Lines and Ruffled Rims

Quick identification

A pair of clear glass bud vases with a ball-shaped bulb on a flared foot, a tall narrow neck and a ruffled trumpet rim. Each is decorated with hand-brushed bands of yellow (a bright chartreuse or neon yellow) on the neck and around the bulb, thin metallic gold lines above and below each band, and a solid yellow painted foot. The yellow is surface paint with visible circular brush streaks, not colored glass, and the foot underside has an unpainted rough center. No marks or labels. Unidentified, maker unknown; no matching listing or catalog was found.

Detailed visual description

Clear bud vases with chartreuse bands and gold lines

This pair of clear glass bud vases with yellow bands, gold lines and ruffled tops follows one simple form: a round ball-shaped bulb sitting on a short flared foot, a tall narrow neck, and a trumpet top that opens into a wavy, ruffled rim. The glass is clear (colorless, fairly thin). All the color comes from painted bands of yellow, a bright chartreuse close to neon or lime yellow, and thin lines of gold, a shiny metallic gold.

Decoration, from top to bottom: the ruffled rim and upper trumpet are plain clear glass. On the upper neck is a wide yellow band with a thin gold line just above it and another just below it. The bulb has a gold line at the shoulder, a second wide yellow band around its widest part, and a gold line under that band. Solid yellow paint covers the flared foot all the way around. Brushed on while the vase turned, the yellow shows fine circular brush streaks and slightly uneven edges rather than a flat printed finish.

Underside: the bottom of the foot is painted yellow with a round unpainted center spot that is rough and dull, consistent with a ground-off or rough pontil area. No maker mark, acid stamp or paper label appears on either vase. Seen through the clear glass, the back of each yellow band is flat and opaque, showing the color is surface paint rather than colored glass.

On this copy: the two vases stand roughly 9 to 10 inches tall, judged against a hand in photo 2 (not measured). The gold lines are worn and spotty, with dark flecks and thin areas in the close-up (photo 4). Small scuffs mark the yellow paint, the underside has dirt and paint specks, and the clear glass shows light scratches and dust, with a small dark speck inside one bulb. No chips or cracks were seen in the ruffled rims. In photo 1 the right vase stands slightly lower than the left, which may be camera angle.

Questions

About the Pair of Yellow-Band Ruffled Glass Bud Vases

How do I identify glass bud vases with yellow stripes and gold lines?

Look at the bottom of the foot for a sticker or acid mark, and compare the shape: these have a ball bulb on a flared foot, a tall neck and a ruffled rim, with brushed yellow bands and thin gold lines. This pair has no mark or label, and we have not found an exact match yet.

Is the yellow on my vase colored glass or paint?

On this pair it is paint brushed onto the outside of clear glass. You can see circular brush streaks, and the underside of the foot is painted with a bare round spot in the middle.

Who made these yellow banded bud vases?

Unknown. Neither vase is marked. If you own the same vases with an original label, please tell us so we can add the maker.

Are the gold lines on vintage painted glass real gold?

Gold trim on decorated glassware was usually a thin metallic gold or gold-colored fired line. On these vases it is worn and spotty. It has not been tested.
