Tall Hand-Blown Clear Bubble Glass Trumpet Vase with Cobalt Blue Foot and Ruffled Cobalt-Edged Rim

Quick identification

A hand-blown trumpet vase of clear glass full of tiny seed bubbles sits on a thick solid disc foot of blue, deep cobalt glass. The top flares into a wide flat collar crimped into four rounded lobes, edged with a thin line of the same cobalt. Its walls are plain, and the foot shows a rounded central boss from hand finishing. With no mark or label, the maker is unknown. Clear bubble glass with cobalt trim is the classic look of Jalisco, Mexico workshops, so Mexican origin is likely by style only. Unlike Murano or Fenton ruffled vases, it is seeded glass colored only at foot and rim.

About this item

Clear glass with cobalt trim, a Mexican blown glass look

Hand-blown glass in Mexico goes back to the colonial period, with the first glass workshop set up in Puebla in the 1500s. In Jalisco the main centers are Tonala and Tlaquepaque near Guadalajara, where workshops traditionally melt down recycled bottles and jars, which is one reason this kind of glass is full of small bubbles. Clear bubble glass trimmed with cobalt blue is one of the best known looks from these shops, but because this vase carries no mark, Mexico is a style match rather than a confirmed origin.

Detailed visual description

Clear bubble glass trumpet vase with a cobalt foot and cobalt-edged ruffled rim

This hand-blown clear bubble glass trumpet vase with a cobalt blue foot and ruffled cobalt rim is a tall cone that widens steadily from a narrow base to a broad flared top, with the top opening about twice the width of the foot. Its body is clear glass, colorless and packed with tiny seed bubbles that give it a slightly frosty sparkle. The only color is blue, a deep saturated cobalt, used on the foot and as a thin line around the rim.

At the top the glass opens into a wide, almost flat collar that is pulled into four broad, rounded lobes, so the rim reads like a wavy four-petal flower from above. A narrow band of the same blue, deep cobalt glass runs all the way around the outer edge of the ruffle. The cone walls are smooth and plain, with no cutting, etching, enameling or applied decoration. Near the base the clear cone thickens into a short solid section, and the cobalt glass rises into it as a small blue knop that shows from inside the vase as a dark blue spot at the bottom of the well.

The foot is a thick round disc of solid blue, deep cobalt glass that flares slightly where it meets the clear body. Underneath, the foot shows concentric rings and a rounded central boss where the stem was joined and the piece was held on the rod, a sign of hand finishing. No etched signature, molded mark, paper label or sticker appears on the base or anywhere else.

On this copy: the vase stands about 12 to 14 inches tall, judged against an adult hand (not measured with a tape). It is whole, with no chips or cracks seen on the ruffled rim or the foot. The underside of the foot has fine surface scratches from shelf wear, and dust and debris have settled at the bottom of the interior well.

Questions

About the Blown Glass Vase, Cobalt Foot and Rim

How do I tell where a clear bubble glass vase with a cobalt blue foot was made?

Look for a paper label, an etched signature or a sticker. This one has none. Clear seeded glass trimmed in cobalt is a classic look of hand-blown glass from Jalisco, Mexico, so Mexico is likely, but that is based on style only.

Are the tiny bubbles in my glass vase a flaw?

No. Small seed bubbles are typical of hand-blown glass made from melted recycled glass and are part of the look, not damage.

How can I tell if a glass vase was blown by hand?

On this vase the foot was applied in a different color, the rim was pulled and crimped by hand into four uneven lobes, and the underside shows a rounded central boss where the piece was held on the rod.
