Pine Deluxe Jar, Clear Quart Fruit Jar with Glass Lid and Wire Bail, Pine Glass Co., Okmulgee, Oklahoma

Quick identification

The Pine Deluxe jar is a clear glass quart fruit jar embossed on the front in three lines, PINE / DELUXE / JAR, with a lightning-style closure: a glass lid with a raised center bar, a top wire and a neck wire with a drop lever, sealed by a rubber ring. Its base has concentric rings and no lettering. Nothing on the jar names its maker, but sellers attribute it to Pine Glass Co. of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, about 1927 to 1929, which makes it one of the few fruit jars associated with Oklahoma.

About this item

An Oklahoma fruit jar

Sellers attribute the Pine Deluxe jar to the Pine Glass Company of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and date it to about 1927 to 1929. Okmulgee had several glass plants in that period, including a Ball Brothers plant from 1927. Jars made in Oklahoma are less common than the big national brands, which gives this one regional collector interest.

Detailed visual description

Clear quart jar embossed PINE DELUXE JAR with a wire bail lid

The Pine Deluxe jar is a clear glass quart fruit jar (canning jar) with straight sides, rounded shoulders and a short wide neck closed by a glass lid and a two-wire bail, the lightning-style closure. Its glass is clear, colorless with a very faint gray tint where it is thickest, and has the slightly wavy look of machine-made jars of its era.

The front is embossed in raised letters in three lines: PINE in tall, condensed block capitals with small serifs, DELUXE in smaller, bolder capitals just below, and JAR in widely spaced capitals near the base. Back and sides are plain. On top sits the glass lid, a flat-topped disk with a raised bar across the center that keeps the top wire in place. For the closure, a long top wire hooks into a neck wire with a drop lever. Pushing the lever down clamps the lid onto a rubber ring.

Underside: flat with concentric rings and a small center circle, and no embossed lettering or numbers seen. The jar itself does not name its maker; the attribution to Pine Glass Co. of Okmulgee, Oklahoma, and the 1927 to 1929 dating come from seller listings for the same jar.

On this copy: not measured; it fills an adult hand, consistent with a quart. A red rubber sealing ring with a pull tab is still in place, cracked and torn at the tab. A white painted X sits on the shoulder above the lettering, and a paper sticker remains on the lid. The wires are dark gray and intact. Dirt and debris sit inside the bottom, and the base has light wear. No chips or cracks were seen.
