Small White Porcelain Leaf Trinket Dish with Pink Rose Decal, Gold Stem and Gold Rim, Made in China

Quick identification

This is a small white porcelain trinket dish shaped like a heart-shaped leaf, with a gold-coated curled stem, a scalloped rim outlined in bright gold and a printed decal of pink and deep raspberry roses with a white and yellow flower and sage green leaves. The base has an unglazed oval foot ring, a gold foil sticker reading Made in China and a paper strip reading NOT FOR FOOD USAGE. With no maker or pattern name, it is unidentified beyond Chinese manufacture. It is a decorative gift-shop dish, not a backstamped Japanese or English bone china leaf dish.

About this item

What the Not For Food Usage sticker means

Since 1994 the FDA has required decorative ceramics sold in the US that are not safe for food to carry a conspicuous stick-on label and a permanent statement on the base, using wording such as Not for Food Use. May Poison Food. This dish has only a paper strip reading NOT FOR FOOD USAGE and a gold Made in China sticker, which mark it as a decorative imported piece. Treat it as a trinket or ring dish, not for serving food.

Detailed visual description

White leaf dish with a pink rose spray and a gold stem

This white porcelain leaf trinket dish with pink roses and a gold stem is a small, shallow pin or ring dish shaped like a broad, heart-shaped leaf (similar to a linden or poplar leaf), with a pointed tip at one end and a short curled stem at the other. Glazed in white, a slightly cool glossy white, it is decorated in pink, green and gold.

The center carries a printed transfer decal of a rose spray running down the leaf: two full-blown roses in pink and magenta (a deep raspberry rose) at the top, a white and pale yellow flower with a pink center in the middle, a third rose lower down, small rosebuds, tiny lavender blossoms and green leaves in a soft sage green. A thin painted line of gold, a bright yellow gold, outlines the leaf edge, which is gently scalloped and wavy with a notch near the tip. At the top of the leaf, the stem is a small raised loop of clay, fully coated in shiny gold. Fine gray specks show under the white glaze.

Underneath, the dish is glossy white with an oval, unglazed foot ring showing gritty white clay. Inside the foot ring, near the stem end, is a small oval gold foil sticker with a thin black border and Made in / China in small black handwritten-style script, and below it a cream paper strip printed NOT FOR FOOD USAGE in bold black block capitals running lengthwise (stickers seen on 1 copy). No printed or stamped backstamp, maker name or pattern name appears.

On this copy: the dish is roughly 5 to 6 inches long and fits in an adult palm (not measured). It is whole. The gold rim line is worn thin in spots, there is a short hairline or glaze line at one rim notch and a tiny nick near the tip, and there are light surface marks and specks in the glaze. Both stickers are intact, and the gold stem is bright with little wear.

Questions

About the Rose Leaf Trinket Dish, Gold Trim

What does NOT FOR FOOD USAGE on the bottom of my dish mean?

It marks the dish as decorative ware that was not tested or approved for contact with food, often because of the glaze or decoration. US rules for decorative ceramics require this kind of warning, so use the dish for rings, pins or trinkets only.

How do I find out who made my leaf trinket dish?

Look for a printed backstamp, a pattern name or a company name on a sticker. This dish has only a gold Made in China sticker, so the maker and importer are not recorded.

Is a rose leaf dish with a Made in China sticker vintage?

Rose-decal leaf dishes were made for decades. The sticker only tells you the country. The wording of its food-use label differs from the wording required after mid-1994, which may hint at an earlier import, but there is no date mark.
