About this item

A risque novelty pair

Small green frogs with male and female human anatomy molded on the underside were sold as gag gifts and turn up on the resale market as naughty frogs or anatomically correct frogs. Detailed visual description

Two squat green frogs with rhinestone eyes and a surprise underneath

This green ceramic naughty frog pair is a set of two small crouching frog figurines with tucked front legs, big folded back legs and rounded heads, in a glossy mottled glaze: green, a bright emerald shading to a paler speckled jade on the high spots, with darker gray-green where the glaze pools between the legs. One frog is a little longer and slimmer than the other. Both bodies are hollow.

Each head has two inset faceted clear rhinestone eyes set into round sockets edged in gold, and an open mouth hole at the front that leads into the hollow body; on one frog the hole is wide and round, on the other it is a smaller oval slit. The rhinestone eyes and open mouths are seen on 1 copy; the similar pairs found online do not mention them. There is no painted detail beyond the gold around the eyes.

The surprise is underneath. Both undersides are fully glazed in a darker green, a deep bottle green, and molded in relief with the shapes outlined in black. One frog is molded as a male, with human male genitals between the back legs, and the other as a female, with breasts and female genitals. This is the gag novelty pair sellers call naughty frogs or anatomically correct frogs. No maker's mark, stamp, sticker or country of origin appears on either frog.

On this copy: not measured; palm size, close to the 2.5 to 2.75 inch length listed for similar pairs. Several rhinestones have lost their foil backing or are broken and read dark blue-gray, while one eye on the smaller frog is still clear. Small brown and rust-colored specks and glaze skips show on the noses and undersides, and the gold around the eyes is worn. No chips or cracks were seen.

Questions

About the Novelty Ceramic Frog Pair

What are the green ceramic frogs with body parts on the bottom?

They are novelty gag figurines, usually sold as a male and female pair, with human anatomy molded on the underside. Sellers list them as naughty frogs or anatomically correct frogs.

Who made the anatomically correct frog figurines?

No maker is known. This pair has no mark, and the similar pairs found online are unmarked as well. One seller lists Japan as the origin of a similar pair, but nothing on these frogs confirms it.

How do I identify a vintage naughty frog pair?

Turn them over. The underside is glazed and molded in relief, one male and one female. Look also for eye details (this pair has inset rhinestones), the glaze color and any open mouth hole, since several versions exist.
