1985 Lite Beer World Series of Tavern Pool Stoneware Mug, J. Mesa Design, Sports Tournaments of America, Japan
The 1985 Lite Beer World Series of Tavern Pool collector mug is a lidless cream stoneware stein with a raised twisted rope band below the neck and a large angular handle. Its front reads 1985 LITE BEER WORLD SERIES OF TAVERN POOL in navy, red and gold with a black 8-ball; the back shows racked pool balls, two cues and the Lite BEER logo. On the base is printed Collector Mug Design by J. Mesa expressly for Sports Tournaments of America, Inc., with a JAPAN label. Mugs from other years of this Miller Lite amateur tournament use different artwork, such as a Caesars Palace design.

A Miller Lite pool tournament souvenir
The World Series of Tavern Pool was an amateur pool tournament sponsored by Miller Lite in the 1980s, with qualifiers in local bars, regional rounds and finals in Las Vegas, according to players who took part. Collector mugs were made for the event, and the bottom of this one credits the design to J. Mesa and says it was made expressly for Sports Tournaments of America, Inc. Mugs for other years used different artwork, so the printed year matters when matching one.
Cream crazed stein-style mug with an 8-ball logo and racked pool balls
The 1985 Lite Beer World Series of Tavern Pool collector mug is a tall, lidless stein-style mug in a glossy cream glaze, a warm ivory shading to light tan, over a heavy stoneware or earthenware body. Its lip flares out, the neck narrows, and the body swells into a waisted barrel. A large angular D-shaped handle with a squared spur at the top sits on one side. A raised twisted rope band circles the mug just below the neck, and a plain raised ring sits near the foot.
Front, centered opposite the handle: 1985 in gold (metallic gold) outlined numerals; LITE BEER in bold navy (dark navy blue) serif capitals between thin red (true red) rules; a black 8-ball flanked by gold triangles; WORLD SERIES in large bold navy serif capitals on a gentle curve, framed by navy scroll flourishes; and OF TAVERN POOL inside a red and gold oval cartouche, with TAVERN in tall decorative capitals with curling swash ends. Back: a full rack of multicolor pool balls in a brown wooden triangle, one cue with a white ferrule leaning in from the top, and a second cue with a black and white speckled shaft, a diamond-inlaid butt and a green shamrock on the bumper. One ball in the rack shows the letter L instead of a number. The navy Lite BEER logo sits at the lower left, Lite in tall bold slanted serif letters with BEER in small capitals underneath.
Center of the base: a recessed glazed panel inside an unglazed foot ring, printed in navy and red. Collector Mug Design by arches across the top in small navy sans-serif type, J. Mesa follows in red handwritten script, and expressly for sits below. The Sports Tournaments of America logo fills the middle inside a thin navy circle: a large navy S whose upper loop holds a red, white and navy bullseye target, a dart flying out of the bullseye with red striped fletching that doubles as the crossbar of the T, PORTS in bold navy block capitals to finish the word SPORTS, and TOURNAMENTS OF AMERICA, INC. in red italic capitals. JAPAN appears in white capitals on a small navy rectangle under the logo, which looks like an applied label. No ceramic factory name is shown.
On this copy: not measured. Crazing covers the glaze all over, inside and out, with dark lines in the crackle, and the interior reads tan to brown from staining in the crazing. The foot ring is grimy. Only light wear touches the bright decals, and no chips or cracks were seen.

About the 1985 Lite Beer Tavern Pool Mug
What is a Lite Beer World Series of Tavern Pool mug?
A souvenir collector mug from the Miller Lite sponsored World Series of Tavern Pool, an amateur bar pool tournament of the 1980s. This one is dated 1985 on the front.
What does the J. Mesa mark on the bottom mean?
It credits the mug's design to J. Mesa and says the mug was made expressly for Sports Tournaments of America, Inc. The JAPAN label shows where it was produced. The ceramic factory is not named.
Why is my tavern pool mug covered in fine cracks?
That is crazing, a network of fine cracks in the glaze that is common on this mug. It is a glaze flaw rather than a crack through the body, but it can trap stains, as seen inside this one.
