Detailed visual description

Clear onion-font oil lamp with a beaded chimney

This clear glass kerosene oil lamp is a tabletop pedestal lamp in clear, colorless pressed glass. It has three parts: the glass base, a metal burner screwed into a collar at the top of the font, and a separate clear glass chimney. The base stands on a broad foot, so the lamp is wider at the bottom than the font is across.

Squat and wider than it is tall, the font is an onion or bun shape with faint shallow vertical panels around the sides. Below it a short, thick stem pinches in at the waist and flares out into a wide bell-shaped foot that ends in a thick, rounded step at the edge. The burner is dark metal, blackened gray (a dull gunmetal): a stepped round base with a ribbed rim, four upright wire prongs to hold the chimney, a domed flame spreader with two raised ridges on either side of a long wick slot, and a wick-wheel knob on a short shaft at the front. A flat cloth wick runs down into the font. On top, the chimney is clear glass in a bulb or pear shape, with a narrow straight fitter at the bottom and a rim of small raised beads around the top opening.

Underneath, the foot is plain, smooth and hollow, looking straight up into the stem; no lettering or maker's mark was found, though a tiny raised spot near one edge could not be read. The burner shows no legible stamping in the photos.

On this copy: not measured; the stem fits in an adult hand. Old kerosene has left an amber-yellow tint and film at the bottom of the font, and dust and grime cover the glass. The burner is dusty with surface rust and lint caught in the wick slot. No chips or cracks were seen on the base or chimney.

Questions

About the Clear Glass Kerosene Oil Lamp and Chimney

How do I identify who made my clear glass oil lamp?

Look for raised lettering or patent dates on the underside of the foot and stamped names on the burner's wick-wheel knob or collar. This lamp shows none, so its maker is unknown.

How old is a plain clear glass kerosene lamp?

Without a mark it can only be dated by type. Plain clear pressed glass pedestal lamps like this were made in large numbers for everyday use in the early to mid 20th century.

Why is the inside of my oil lamp yellow?

The amber tint in the font comes from old kerosene residue that has dried on the glass, not from the color of the glass itself.
