Detailed visual description

Tan stein with relief tall ships and a rope handle

The Avon Tall Ships stein is a lidded ceramic beer stein with a rounded, barrel-shaped body on a narrow foot, a straight collar at the top, a rope-twist handle and a hinged metal lid. Its ceramic is tan, a light sandy beige, with a brown antiqued wash rubbed into the recesses so the relief stands out, under a soft satin glaze. Inside, it is glazed plain white-gray.

The body is molded in relief all the way around with a harbor scene: two- and three-masted tall ships under full square sails with pennants at the mastheads, a waterfront town of buildings with rows of windows and pitched roofs, large rounded clouds and small gulls in flight. At the neck sits a twisted rope border over two bands, red (a brick red) above dark brown (a deep chocolate). At the foot are a matching rope border and a dark brown band with ship types lettered in white in an old-fashioned script, separated by small cross-shaped marks; the visible words include Bark, Staysail and ...headed Ketch. Even the handle is modeled as a thick twisted rope.

The lid is pewter-tone metal (dull silver gray) with a wide flat rim and a tall conical spire, embossed with bands of flowers and scrolls and ending in a point. A curved, decorated thumb lift joins a pinned hinge clamped to the top of the handle. Inside the lid is a recessed cup. On the base, a molded raised AVON in capitals sits near the top, with bilingual English and French text printed in black script below it, a stamped number reading C-36644 in gold-brown at the bottom, a small pale oval label, and a ring of green felt around the outer edge.

On this copy: not measured. The ceramic looks intact with no chips seen. Dull with white oxidation and grime inside, the metal lid has cobwebby debris caught at the hinge, and the green felt is fuzzy and dirty. Part of the C-36644 number is worn.
