Vintage Norway Souvenir Viking Longship, Cast Metal Hull with Shields, Copper NORGE Sail and Log Stand
This is a Norwegian souvenir Viking longship model in three parts: a dark gunmetal cast metal hull, a copper-tone curved sail on a mast and yard, and a wooden log cradle stand. The hull has a row of round shields with center bosses along each side, molded overlapping planking (clinker) lines underneath, a deck with a raised plank pattern, a spiral curl at the stern and a pointed upturned prow. On the ribbed, hammered-texture sail, NORGE (Norwegian for Norway) is lettered in angular rune-style capitals with a diamond for the O. No maker's mark was found. It is unidentified as to maker and year.

A Norwegian tourist souvenir
NORGE is Norway in Norwegian, and small metal Viking ship models with the word on the sail have long been sold as souvenirs there. This one shows the classic longship features: round shields along the rails, overlapping clinker planking and high curled ends. No maker is marked, so its exact age is unknown.
Dark metal longship with shields and a copper NORGE sail
This vintage souvenir Viking ship from Norway is a small longship model made of cast metal in two tones, sitting in a separate wooden stand. The long, narrow hull is black, a dark gunmetal gray-black, shading to copper, a warm reddish bronze, on the high stern curl and the tip of the prow. Its square sail is copper, a bright burnished copper with darker brown shading in its folds, and the stand is light wood stained gray-gold, a weathered driftwood tone.
Front to back: the stern rises and curls back into a tight spiral scroll, and the prow at the other end rises to a short pointed upturned tip. Along the top edge of each side runs a row of overlapping round shields, each with a raised center boss, under a beaded rail. Inside, the hull is cast with a raised pattern of small rectangles like deck planks. The sail is curved and cast with vertical ribs and a hammered, pebbled texture. It hangs from a horizontal yard and is pierced by a round mast that extends above the yard and below the sail as a peg that fits into the hull. On the sail, NORGE is spelled out in angular, rune-style capitals running at a slant, with the O drawn as a diamond and the G shaped like an angled rune. A faint second line of small marks below the word is too worn to read.
Underneath, the hull is cast with long, overlapping planking lines (clinker or lapstrake style) running from end to end. No maker's mark, foundry mark or country stamp was found on the hull, sail or stand. The stand is a cradle made of two long dowels with slanted cut ends, fastened with small metal brads or staples on top of two short round log cross pieces. Ship, sail assembly and stand all come apart.
On this copy: not measured. The copper finish on the sail is rubbed through to a lighter brass color on the ribs and edges, and the hull's dark finish is worn to bare metal along the shield rail and keel. Light dust and some green verdigris sit at the base of the mast. On top of the dowels, the stand's metal fasteners are visible. All three parts are present.
