Detailed visual description

Barefoot girl in a wide hat on a stump, looking up

This signed L. Thomas 1978 sculpture of a girl in a sun hat shows a barefoot young girl perched on a bark-covered tree stump that rises from a rough rock base. The whole figure has a bronze-tone finish: dark brown, nearly a black chocolate bronze, in the recesses, and olive brown with a soft satin sheen on the high points. Because the material has not been tested, it is not known whether it is cast bronze or a cold cast resin or plaster composition with a bronze-look finish.

She wears a wide floppy brimmed sun hat with a small spray of flowers and leaves on one side of the brim and a band tied in a bow at the back of the crown. Her straight hair falls past her shoulders with a full fringe of bangs, and her face is turned up and to one side. Her dress is sleeveless and knee length with a V neck. Her right hand is raised to her collar, while in her lap her left hand holds a small bunch of flowers. At her feet, the ankles are crossed and the bare toes are modeled in detail on the rock.

The stump has deep vertical bark texture that runs down the back into the base, and the rock base has smoother, faceted sides. At the back edge of the base the artist signature is incised in slanted handwritten script with a large looped capital L: L. Thomas '78. Flat underneath, the base is covered edge to edge in green felt, a muted moss green, framed by a thin dark rim of the cast material. No foundry mark, label or sticker was seen.

On this copy: roughly 10 to 12 inches tall judging by the hand holding it (not measured). A large chip is missing from the top front edge of the hat brim. Dust and lint sit in the hair, dress folds and bark texture, and the felt is fuzzy and worn. No other breaks were seen.

Questions

About the L. Thomas '78 Girl in Sun Hat Sculpture

Who is the artist L. Thomas who signed this sculpture?

Not identified yet. The signature is incised in script on the back edge of the base and reads L. Thomas '78. Searches of auction, collector and museum records did not find this piece or a matching sculptor. If you recognize it, please share what you know.

How old is my L. Thomas girl in a hat sculpture?

The signature is dated '78, so 1978 is the most likely year it was modeled or made.

How do I tell if my sculpture is real bronze or cold cast resin?

Real cast bronze is very heavy and cold to the touch, and bare metal shows gold or brown where the patina wears. Cold cast resin is lighter, and a chip shows a pale or dark filler under the finish. This piece has a felt-covered flat bottom, which is common on resin pieces, but its material has not been tested.
