From the big Meriden maker
International Silver Company of Meriden, Connecticut was formed by combining older silver firms, and Meriden Britannia Company became part of it in 1898. Its silver plate hollowware is commonly marked INTERNATIONAL with the IS initials and a model number, as on this piece. A Meriden Silver Plate Co. footed handled dish with the same 650 number appears in seller listings, which suggests the form came from one of International's divisions.
Footed silver plate box with handles and scroll feet
The International Silver Co. No. 650 silver plate footed planter is an open, rectangular box with clipped (canted) corners and straight sides that flare outward from a narrower base to a wide, plain rim. It is silver plate, a bright silver finish over a base metal, and stands on four small feet with a loop handle on each short end. Sellers use it as a planter, jardiniere, centerpiece box, nut dish or catch-all.
Handles: each end has a flat-topped loop handle shaped like a squared U, fixed to the side just below the rim, with a raised reeded rib of four or five lines (a small fan or shell-like ribbing) in the middle of the grip. Feet: at each corner a cast foot is soldered to the base. Each has a leafy shell or acanthus cap against the body and curves down and outward into a scroll that ends in a rounded toe. Inside, the floor rises to a low point in the middle where the panels meet, and the side seams show at the canted corners.
Underside: the center of the base carries a stamped mark in plain block capitals. INTERNATIONAL curves in an arch over a half-round panel holding the letters I and S, each in its own small rounded box. Under the arch, SILVER PLATE runs along a straight band with a stepped end at the right. Below the mark is the model number 650 in larger numerals.
On this copy: the plating is heavily tarnished, with dark gray, purple and rose iridescent toning, and is worn through to the copper-colored base metal on the corners, handle tops and lower sides. White powdery corrosion spots sit inside one rim and on one handle side, with many fine scratches on the underside and a small dark spot or pinhole in the inside floor. The handles and feet are firmly attached. Size was not measured.

About the International Silver No. 650 Footed Silver Plate Planter
What does International IS Silver Plate 650 on the bottom mean?
International and the IS initials are the mark of International Silver Co. Silver Plate means a thin layer of silver over a base metal, not solid silver. 650 is the model number for this footed box shape.
Is International Silver plate real silver?
Pieces marked Silver Plate have a coating of real silver over a base metal. Only pieces marked Sterling are solid silver. On this box the plating is worn through to the copper-colored base metal in spots.
What was a silver plate box with four feet and two handles used for?
Shapes like this were sold as centerpiece or nut dishes and are now often used as planters or jardinieres, as it is open, deep and stable on its four feet.
What is an International Silver 650 footed dish worth?
A Meriden Silver Plate Co. dish with the same 650 number was listed on eBay at $29.95. Heavy tarnish and worn plating, as on this copy, lower the price.
