1985 Walt Disney Productions Flat Wooden Mickey Mouse Christmas Ornament in a Plush-Trimmed Santa Hat

Quick identification

This is a flat, cutout wooden Mickey Mouse Christmas ornament with an oval label on the back reading "©Walt Disney Productions / 1985 / HANDCRAFTED IN TAIWAN". The front is a printed classic Mickey (black body, cream face, blue shorts with two white buttons, big yellow shoes) standing with his hands behind his back. A separate red wooden Santa hat with a fuzzy white plush brim and white pompom is glued on between two raised black wood ear discs, and a gold metallic cord forms the hanger. Its back and edges are painted white. No manufacturer is named. Later Disney wood ornaments read "The Walt Disney Company" instead.

About this item

A dated Disney-licensed wood ornament

The back label dates this ornament to 1985 and places its production in Taiwan, where many painted wood and chenille Christmas ornaments were made for American importers in the late 1970s and 1980s. Its copyright line reads Walt Disney Productions, the name the company used before it became The Walt Disney Company in 1986, so later wooden Mickey ornaments carry the newer name. Nowhere does the label say which importer sold it.

Detailed visual description

Flat wooden Mickey in a red Santa hat with white plush trim

The 1985 Walt Disney Productions wooden Mickey Mouse Santa hat ornament is a flat cutout Christmas ornament sawn from a single piece of wood about a quarter inch thick, with the outline following Mickey's figure. Its front is printed in classic Mickey colors outlined in black: black, a glossy jet black, for the body and ears; cream, a pale buttery cream, for the face; red, a bright cherry red, for the tongue; blue, a medium royal blue, for the shorts; and yellow, a warm golden yellow, for the shoes. White, a flat bright white, covers the cut edges and the entire back.

Front to back: Mickey stands with his hands tucked behind his back, smiling and looking to the right, with his left foot stepped forward so the sole of the shoe shows. His shorts have two white oval buttons. A Santa hat cut from a separate piece of wood and painted red, a true Christmas red, is glued across the top of his head and tilts to the left. Along the brim runs a strip of fuzzy white plush (a short-pile fabric that looks like flocked felt), and a white plush pompom is glued to the tip on the far left. His two round ears are separate black wood discs layered on top, one in front of the hat and one tucked behind it, so the head has a stacked, three-dimensional look. A thin gold, a shiny metallic gold, cord is threaded through the top of the head as a hanger.

On the back, an oval label sits on the lower foot, at the bottom left when viewed from behind. It is white with a thin black oval border, with the copyright line in small upright capitals and lowercase, a large bold 1985 in the center, and HANDCRAFTED IN TAIWAN in small capitals along the bottom curve. Seen from behind, the rear ear disc is silver. The label names the Disney license and the country but not the manufacturer.

On this copy: not measured; it is hand-sized. The printed front is bright with only light wear. A small smudge or residue mark sits on the lower right of the blue shorts, the white edge paint has small dings at the feet, and the plush trim is slightly matted. On the back are a blob of dark glue behind the front ear, a strip of tan paper with dried glue across the shoulders, and part of a torn white paper sticker with a handwritten mark on the back of the head (seen on 1 copy). Hat, ears, pompom and cord are all present.

Questions

About the 1985 Wooden Mickey Santa Hat Ornament

How do I tell what year my wooden Mickey Mouse ornament is from?

Look at the label or stamp on the back. This one has an oval label reading Walt Disney Productions, 1985, Handcrafted in Taiwan, so it dates to 1985. Ornaments marked The Walt Disney Company are later, since the company took that name in 1986.

Who made the 1985 Walt Disney Productions wooden ornaments?

The label names only the Disney license and Taiwan, not the manufacturer. Several importers sold Taiwan-made wood ornaments in the 1980s, and we have not confirmed which one sold this design.

What does 'Handcrafted in Taiwan' on a Disney ornament mean?

It means the ornament was cut, printed and assembled in Taiwan, a major source of wood and chenille Christmas ornaments for the US market in the 1970s and 1980s.
