Miniature Cobalt Blue Hobnail Glass Bud Vase with a Rolled Rim, Base Molded MADE IN TAIWAN

Quick identification

This is a miniature cobalt blue hobnail glass bud vase made in Taiwan, small enough to sit in a palm (sellers list the same vase at about 3.25 inches tall). It is molded (pressed) glass in a pear or baluster shape with a rounded body, a narrow waisted neck and a slightly flared, thick rolled rim. Small, close-set raised hobnail dots in staggered rows cover the outside from base to rim. The flat recessed base is molded with MADE IN TAIWAN in raised capitals around a circle. Unlike older American hobnail glass such as Fenton, it has a Taiwan mark and very fine, dense hobs.

About this item

A shelf miniature

Small cobalt hobnail vases marked Taiwan were sold as inexpensive giftware and bud vases. The molded MADE IN TAIWAN mark sets it apart from American hobnail glass by makers such as Fenton, which uses larger, bolder hobs.

Detailed visual description

Tiny cobalt blue hobnail bud vase with a rolled rim

This miniature cobalt hobnail vase from Taiwan is a small pressed glass bud vase in blue, a deep cobalt blue that glows a brighter royal blue where light passes through. It has a pear or baluster shape: a rounded lower body, a gently waisted neck and a slightly flared mouth finished with a thick, smooth rolled rim. It is small enough to sit in an open palm.

Front to back: nearly the whole outside, from the base up to just under the rim, is covered with small raised hobnail dots set in close, staggered rows, so the surface looks pebbled and catches light in many small highlights. The dots are fine and dense, smaller than the bold hobs on classic American hobnail glass. Inside and along the rim band the glass is smooth, with the hobnail texture showing through from within.

The base is flat and slightly recessed inside a ring of hobs. Raised capitals run around the base in a circle reading MADE IN TAIWAN, molded into the glass, around a smooth center. No other maker's mark, logo or number was seen.

On this copy: not measured; it is about the length of three fingers wide, and listings of the same vase give about 3.25 inches tall. The glass is clean with a few tiny surface specks on the rim. No chips or cracks are visible.

About the Cobalt Blue Hobnail Mini Vase, Taiwan

Is my small cobalt hobnail vase Fenton?

Not this one. It is molded MADE IN TAIWAN on the base, while Fenton is American and usually marked with an oval Fenton logo on pieces made after the early 1970s. Its hobs are also finer and denser than Fenton's.

How do I identify a cobalt blue hobnail bud vase?

Check the base for a molded mark, then compare the shape and the size and spacing of the hobs. This one is pear shaped with a rolled rim, fine dense hobs and MADE IN TAIWAN in a circle on the base.

What is a mini cobalt hobnail vase from Taiwan worth?

One listed comp of the same vase was priced at $9.50.
