Silver-Tone Fleur de Lis Tabletop Finial on a White Stone Ball and Square Gadrooned Pedestal

Quick identification

This is a tall decorative tabletop finial (shelf or mantel accent) in the shape of a fleur de lis, unidentified, maker unknown. A polished silver-tone cast metal fleur de lis with a pointed center petal, two outward-curling side petals and a square collar cast with a raised grid sits on a polished white stone ball with faint gray veining. Under the ball, a silver-tone stepped square pedestal flares into a gadrooned (ribbed) base. A central threaded rod and nut hold the hollow cast base together. No maker's mark or label was found. It matches modern home decor finials rather than antique architectural finials.

About this item

A decorator accent

Tabletop finials copy the carved or cast finials that topped gate posts and architecture, scaled down to stand on a shelf, mantel or console table. This one combines a fleur de lis, a stylized lily used as a heraldic emblem, with a stone ball and a stepped pedestal. No maker mark is visible, so its maker and date are unknown.

Detailed visual description

Silver fleur de lis on a white stone ball and square pedestal

The silver fleur de lis finial on a marble ball is a tall tabletop decor piece built in three stacked parts: a large cast metal fleur de lis on top, a round white stone ball in the middle, and a stepped square metal pedestal at the bottom. Its metal is silver, a bright mirror-polished nickel-like silver, and the ball is white, a creamy milk white with faint gray veining and a soft pearly sheen, like polished marble or alabaster.

Front to back: the fleur de lis has a tall, plump center petal that tapers to a point, and two side petals that sweep out and curl downward into hooked tips. Where the petals meet, a square collar band is cast with a raised three-by-three grid of square bosses, like a quilted or waffle pattern. Below the collar, two short lower petals curl upward like crescents above a small square plate that sits on the stone ball. Both faces are the same. Under the ball the pedestal has a square cap, a tapered square shaft, a stepped collar and a flared square foot whose lower edge is gadrooned with close vertical ribs.

The bottom of the pedestal is open and hollow, showing the rough inside of the metal casting in stepped square layers. At the center a small square opening shows a threaded rod with a nut on a gold-tone plate, which holds the fleur de lis, ball and pedestal together. No maker's mark, label, sticker or country of origin was seen on the base or the metal parts.

On this copy: not measured; a hand holding it shows it is roughly as tall as a forearm and the stone ball is about palm width. The polished silver finish has small dark pits and speckles, most visible on the center petal, and some dulling on the pedestal. Inside, the base is coated with a white chalky residue, possibly plaster or oxidation, with yellow staining. No chips are visible on the stone ball.

Questions

About the Silver Fleur de Lis Finial on Marble Ball

Who made the silver fleur de lis finial with a white marble ball?

Unknown so far. There is no mark, label or sticker on it. If you have one with its original tag, please add the brand in the comments.

Is the ball on my fleur de lis finial real marble?

It looks like polished white stone with faint gray veining, like marble or alabaster, but it has not been tested. Real stone feels cold and heavy, while resin feels warmer and lighter.

What is a tabletop finial used for?

It is a purely decorative accent for a shelf, mantel or console table, modeled on the ornaments that top posts, gates and roofs.
