Lanshire movements in stone clocks
Lanshire Clock and Instrument Corporation was a Chicago clock company, founded around 1944 by Joseph Landgraf according to a collector history (the date is not confirmed by primary records). It sold finished clocks and also movements and parts used in craft and decorative clocks, so its motors turn up in onyx, agate and other stone slab clocks. The onyx slab on this clock was cut and fitted by an unknown maker.
Banded cream onyx slab with a small brass clock
This Lanshire electric mantel clock in a banded onyx slab is a small round electric clock set into a thick, freeform piece of polished stone. The stone is cream, a milky ivory white, swirled with bands and rings of honey, a translucent caramel tan, in the wavy, concentric pattern of banded calcite onyx (often sold as Mexican onyx). Some areas are porous and pitted like travertine. Cut flat and polished on the front face, the stone is left rough and natural on the outer edges and back. Each slab was cut individually, so the outline and banding vary from clock to clock.
In the upper left of the front face sits the clock. A round brass bezel, polished gold-tone metal, rings a cream dial, an off-white with a slight silver-gray sheen. At its center is a gold filigree starburst of pointed petals inside a gold ring of dots and a thin gold chapter ring. The numerals are black Arabic numbers 1 through 12 in a stylized Art Deco style with a curly 2, 3 and 4. Black hour and minute hands end in spade-shaped tips, and a thin gold sweep second hand runs from a small cream center cap. Small print along the bottom of the dial reads MOVEMENT BY LANSHIRE on the left and CHICAGO, ILLINOIS on the right.
Back: the movement sits in a round hole in the stone behind a round dark gray steel cover plate, a gunmetal gray, held by a hex nut on the right. A cream plastic time-set knob with a ridged edge pokes through at the upper left. Stamped in plain block capitals across the plate: CLOCK MOVEMENT, BY, LANSHIRE (largest), FOR A.C. ONLY, and 105-125V. 60CY. 2W. A cream two-wire zip cord runs from the back. No CSA logo was seen on this plate.
On this copy: the slab is wider than it is tall, roughly a foot across by eye (not measured), with a peaked top on the left and a rough sloping back edge on the right. The clock crystal is broken, with loose shards caught inside the bezel near the 8 and along the lower edge, and the dial is dusty. Pits, dust and small edge chips mark the stone, and the steel cover has scuffs and light rust marks near its rim. In the photos, the cord is looped over the top of the slab. Whether the clock runs is not shown.

About the Lanshire Banded Onyx Electric Clock
How do I identify the maker of my onyx clock?
Check the bottom of the dial and the metal cover on the back. This clock reads MOVEMENT BY LANSHIRE, CHICAGO, ILLINOIS on the dial and CLOCK MOVEMENT BY LANSHIRE on the back plate, which names the movement maker. The stone itself is unmarked.
What does 60 CY on the back of my clock mean?
CY means cycles, the older term for hertz (Hz). 105-125V. 60CY. 2W. means the motor runs on standard North American 60 cycle household current and uses about 2 watts.
Is the stone on my clock real onyx?
It looks like banded calcite onyx, often sold as Mexican onyx, with cream and translucent honey bands and some porous areas. We have not tested it.
What is a Lanshire onyx clock worth?
A similar onyx stone Lanshire clock was listed on eBay at $94.75. Condition matters: this one has a broken crystal, which lowers its appeal until replaced.
