Glasbake Clear Glass Oval Casserole with Hobnail Bubble Bottom and Ribbed Knob Lid, Marked 78

Quick identification

This is a Glasbake clear glass oval casserole with its lid. The dish is a deep oval with small tab handles at each end and a floor textured with rows of raised bubbles (a hobnail-style pebble pattern) around a smooth oval panel. In that panel Glasbake is molded in script inside a cushion-shaped frame, with 78 below and faint lettering around it. A band of fine concentric ribs circles the solid clear mushroom knob on the domed oval lid. Glasbake ovenware was made by McKee Glass from about 1917 to 1961 and by Jeannette until 1983.

About this item

Glasbake ovenware

Glasbake was heat-resistant glass ovenware made by McKee Glass Company in Jeannette, Pennsylvania, under license from Corning. Accounts date the line's start to 1917 or 1921; it continued under the McKee Division of Thatcher Glass until 1961, and Jeannette Glass sold it as Glasbake from 1961 to 1983.

Detailed visual description

Clear oval baker with a bubbled floor and knob lid

The Glasbake clear oval casserole is a deep oval baking dish in clear, colorless heat-resistant glass with a matching domed lid. Smooth, gently flared sides rise to a flat rolled rim, with a small flat tab at each end of the oval to grip it by. As is usual in pressed ovenware, the clear glass has a faint gray-green tint at the thick edges.

The lid is a shallow oval dome with a flat flange that rests on the dish rim. In the middle is a raised round collar circled by a band of fine concentric ribs, and from it rises a solid clear knob shaped like a short mushroom, with a slightly hollowed top. Most distinctive of all is the inside floor of the dish: a large oval field of raised, closely packed bubbles or hobnail bumps in rows, with a smooth oval panel in the center.

The mark is molded in that center panel and reads through the glass from inside or below: Glasbake in a rounded handwritten-style script with a long underline-like frame, set inside a cushion or pillow-shaped outline. Below it is the number 78. Small raised characters run around the panel above and below; a 2 and an S are visible, and the lower line appears to read U.S.A., but most of these are too faint to read with certainty in the photos.

On this copy: the dish measures about 9 3/4 inches long from tab to tab on the tape measure. Both pieces look clean and clear, with no chips or cracks seen; there are light water spots and a little grime in the bubbled texture.

Questions

About the Glasbake Clear Oval Casserole with Lid

What does the 78 on the bottom of my Glasbake dish mean?

It is a molded number, most likely the mold or shape number. No source was found that ties 78 to a year or a size.

Who made Glasbake, and is it the same as Pyrex?

Glasbake was made by McKee Glass, licensed by Corning, and later by Jeannette Glass. It is a different brand from Corning's Pyrex, though both are heat-resistant ovenware.

How old is a clear Glasbake casserole?

Glasbake was made from about 1917 until 1983. This dish has no date mark, so it can only be placed in that span.
