A 1967 novelty radio from Hedaya & Co.
On the back, this radio is printed ©HEDAYA & CO. INC.1967, so the design dates to 1967 and was sold under the Hedaya name. A Hedaya 6 transistor radio dated 1966 has also appeared on eBay. The phone parts are decorative. That rotary dial is a speaker grille, and the radio is worked by the two knobs on top.
A cream French-style phone that hides an AM radio
This Hedaya French telephone 6 transistor radio is a novelty AM radio built to look like an ornate French cradle telephone. The body is a rectangular box with rounded edges in cream, a yellowed ivory plastic, sitting on a slightly wider stepped plinth. On top, a gold, a bright brassy gold-tone, bell dome supports a cradle that holds a dummy handset, and a gold braided cord hangs down the side.
The front carries a decal of gold scrollwork framing small painted flowers in pink-red, yellow, blue and green on each side. In the center is a faux rotary dial: a gold-tone ring with ten finger holes and a white finger stop at the lower right, around a round gold mesh speaker grille. A small round hole at the lower left of the front is likely an earphone jack. On the handset, a cream plastic handle has ribbed collars at each end and gold-tone fittings with small finial knobs. At one end is an earpiece (a gold cup over a cream cap); at the other, a curved cream horn mouthpiece sits under a gold bell, where the gold braided cord is wrapped with white thread. A gold rod frame on a post forms the cradle, with a winged crosspiece above the bell.
The controls sit on the top surface beside the bell, on a rectangular gold foil plate. On it, the upper cream knurled knob is the power and volume control, marked OFF on the left and VOL on the right. Between the knobs, 6 TRANSISTOR is printed in bold black block capitals. Marked TUN, the lower knob is the tuner, with an AM scale in small black numerals: 16 13. 10 8 7 6 54. On the back lower right corner, ©HEDAYA & CO. INC.1967 is printed in small black block capitals. Underneath is a white painted metal plate with four black rubber feet, five screws, a pattern of eleven round speaker holes and a rectangular battery opening. A short embossed word near one edge is too faint to read.
On this copy: size not measured. With the battery door missing, the red and black battery wires show through the opening. The cream plastic is yellowed and dusty, the knobs have grime in the knurling, the gold dial ring and bell show light wear and spotting, and the plinth edges are scuffed. Whether it still plays was not tested.
