Vintage Figgjo Flint Norway Ceramic Cheese Board and Wall Plaque, Fishing Village Scene

About this piece

A Norwegian fishing village on a Figgjo Flint cheese board

Figgjo is a Norwegian pottery founded in 1941 near Stavanger, known for bright, printed Scandinavian tableware. This board carries the green "FF Figgjo Flint Norway" backstamp used during the company's Figgjo Flint years, which dates it to about 1968–1979. It was made as a cheese board with a hanging hole, so it doubles as a wall plaque. The scene shows life in a Norwegian fishing village, but the exact pattern name hasn't been confirmed yet.

Detailed visual description

A white Figgjo cheese board printed with fishermen, a red stilt house and leaping fish

The vintage Figgjo Flint fishing village cheese board is a white glazed ceramic board shaped like a tall tag, with clipped corners at the top and a small glazed hanging hole near the top edge. Its front is printed in bright yellow, red, green and two shades of blue with black outlines. It shows three scenes stacked from top to bottom: a fisherman in a rowboat, a red house on stilts over the water, and a fisherman and a woman on a rocky shore. The back is plain white with a green Figgjo Flint Norway backstamp.

The fisherman in a yellow rain hat, the red house on stilts and the woman in a red headscarf, together with the Figgjo Flint mark, identify this white Norwegian cheese board.

  • Shape: tall rectangle with the top corners clipped off at an angle, rounded bottom corners, glossy white glaze.
  • Top scene: a smiling fisherman in a yellow sou'wester hat and yellow oilskin coat sits in a red-and-white rowboat holding a fishing line, with a hooked fish below. Green and blue waves, more fish under the water, light blue seagulls overhead.
  • Middle scene: a tall red wooden house on red stilts with a black roof and white-framed windows. A fisherman in yellow sits on a green dock with two red barrels and a yellow chest. Below, another fisherman in yellow waves from a small yellow boat with a light blue cabin and red and green floats.
  • Bottom scene: a fisherman in a green coat, yellow trousers, black boots and a large yellow hat bends over a red striped barrel, gutting a fish. Beside him stands a blonde woman in a red headscarf, blue blouse, light blue apron and striped red skirt, holding a basket of red fish. Angular blue mountains and a small red stilt cabin behind them, stones in red, blue and white at their feet.
  • Colors: golden yellow, red, grass green, royal blue and light blue, with black outlines and white highlights.
  • Back: plain white glaze with a raised rim. Green backstamp below the hole.
