Made in Sheffield England Engraved Silver Plate Creamer and Scuttle Sugar Bowl
An engraved Sheffield silver plate cream and sugar with no maker's name
This Made in Sheffield England engraved silver plate creamer and sugar is a two-piece cream and sugar set: a pear-shaped cream jug and a round sugar bowl in the coal-scuttle shape, both with beaded rims and tall loop handles. The creamer's base carries a row of four small pseudo-hallmarks, the kind plate makers used to echo sterling hallmarks: a Gothic initial, the word Bros, a script letter and EP for electroplate, with a separate letter C and MADE IN SHEFFIELD ENGLAND. The marks don't spell out a maker's name, and none gives a date. The sugar is stamped only SILVER PLATED / MADE IN ENGLAND, so the two pieces may not come from the same maker. Sellers often call sets like this EPNS, but neither base shows those letters.
A beaded pear-shaped creamer and an engraved scuttle sugar bowl
The Sheffield engraved silver plate creamer and sugar are bright silver (polished silver gray) with hand-engraved decoration and beaded edges. The creamer is a tall pear-shaped jug on a round stepped foot edged with beading, with a beaded rim, a wide pouring spout and a beaded strap handle that rises well above the rim. Under the spout sits a small blank cartouche framed in fine beading, and a band of engraved leafy sprays and flowers wraps the lower body. The sugar is a round, deep bowl in the coal-scuttle shape, its rim cut in a high wavy curve with a pouring lip at the front, all edged in heavier beading. Engraved scrolls and acanthus leaves cover the body. It stands on a plain flared pedestal foot, and a tall arched handle rises from the back and ends in a small curl at the top.
