About this plate

A holiday plaid plate from a Georgia balloon and gift company

This Burton & Burton plaid plate is a hand-painted ceramic plate sold through Burton & Burton of Bogart, Georgia. The company began in 1982, when Maxine Burton started selling balloons out of the back room of Flowers, Inc. Wholesale, the florist supply business she ran with her husband Bob.

The business grew into what it calls the world's largest balloon and coordinating gift supplier, selling balloons, plush, home decor and gift items to florists and gift shops. It is still based in Bogart, with showrooms in Atlanta and Dallas, and has used the name burton + BURTON since 2006.

The red and green tartan makes this a Christmas or winter piece. Plates like this were usually sold in gift shops and florists as part of seasonal tabletop lines.

Detailed visual description

A glossy red and green tartan plate with a Burton & Burton backstamp

The Burton & Burton hand-painted plaid plate is a small round ceramic plate covered edge to edge in a red and dark green tartan. Broad red bands cross at angles to leave dark green squares, and thin olive green lines run through the red. A molded ring shows through the glaze around the center, and the glaze is very glossy.

A red and green plaid Christmas plate with "Burton & Burton, Bogart, GA" on the back is this piece.

  • Front: tartan plaid set on the diagonal: wide red stripes (a tomato red) crossing over dark green (a deep forest green) squares, with thin olive lines.
  • Painting: brushed by hand. The edges of the color blocks are slightly uneven, as hand painting tends to be.
  • Center: a molded ring under the paint marks the well of the plate.
  • Back: plain cream glaze with a dark printed mark in the center and raised "B&B" with a copyright symbol molded below it.
  • Mark: a crest with a crowned shield holding a script B between two supporters, over "Burton & Burton" in script.
  • This copy: a tan patch of old sticker residue beside the mark, and gray marks on the foot ring from use.

Questions

About the Burton & Burton plaid plate

Who made the Burton & Burton plaid plate?

It was made in China and hand-painted for Burton & Burton, a balloon and gift supplier in Bogart, Georgia that sells to florists and gift shops.

How old is it?

There's no date on it. Burton & Burton started in 1982 and later renamed itself burton + BURTON in 2006. The plate most likely dates from the 1990s to 2010s, but that's an estimate.

Is it really hand-painted?

The backstamp says so, and the slightly uneven edges of the plaid blocks fit brushwork rather than a printed decal.

Can it go in the dishwasher?

The backstamp says it is dishwasher safe.

What is it worth?

No sales or listings of this exact plate were found on eBay or Etsy, which is why it is rated Ultra rare. With no sales on record there isn't enough data to set a value yet.
