It sits on an oval nest base molded as a woven basket with a scalloped rim of rounded loops, a stippled inside floor and a basket weave underside with a crossbar band. About this item

A classic farmhouse covered dish

This hen on nest has no maker's mark. Glass hens like this are sold as Indiana Glass style in listings, but unmarked pieces can come from more than one maker, so compare mold details such as the eggs at the breast, the fan tail and the basket weave underside with marked examples.

Detailed visual description

A cobalt glass hen sitting on a basket weave nest

This cobalt blue glass hen on nest is a two-piece pressed glass covered dish: a hollow hen-shaped lid sitting on an oval nest-shaped base. Its glass is blue, a deep transparent cobalt or royal blue, glossy where smooth and sparkling where the molding is detailed. The hen faces to one side with a raised fan tail at the back, so the dish reads as a hen sitting on her nest.

The hen lid is molded all over with feathers: a crinkled comb and wattle on the head, a short pointed beak, small scale-like feathers on the neck, breast and back, and long overlapping wing feathers with herringbone veining along each side. At the back, the tail stands up in a broad fan with ribbed feather lines. Two round eggs peek out at the front edge of the lid by the breast. A flat stippled ledge finishes the lid and rests on the nest rim.

The base is an oval bowl molded on the outside as a woven basket, with a scalloped rim of rounded loops along the top edge. Inside, the walls show the basket weave through the glass and the oval floor is stippled. Underneath, the basket weave continues in rings around a center band crossed by a bar, like the bottom of a woven basket. Inside the lid, the hollow shape of the hen shows clearly. No maker's mark, logo or lettering was seen on the lid or base.

On this copy: size not measured. The glass is whole with no chips or cracks visible; there are light surface scuffs and a few tiny rough spots along the mold lines and the rim scallops.
