About this item

A 1970s Black & Decker homeowner sander

The orange label with the B&D hexagon and the avocado green housing mark Black & Decker's consumer tools of the 1970s. This finishing sander was made in Canada for The Black & Decker Mfg. Co. of Towson, Maryland, and is double insulated, so it has a two-prong plug.

Detailed visual description

Avocado green palm sander with an orange B&D hex label

The Black & Decker No. 7404 finishing sander is an electric orbital pad sander with a long, flat-topped handle running back from a squared motor housing that sits on a rectangular sanding base. Its plastic housing is green, a yellowish avocado or olive green, and the power cord is orange, a bright safety orange, leaving the back of the handle through a black rubber strain relief. A black rubber pad on the bottom holds the sandpaper.

The top of the motor housing has a set of horizontal vent slots on the side and six vertical vent slots on top, with a short rounded knob grip projecting at the front for the second hand. Behind the vents, set into the top of the handle, is a ribbed slide switch. Underneath is the base, a wide rectangular platen with a raised rectangular panel near each end, where the paper clamps sit, and the sanding pad is slightly larger than the base. Phillips screws hold the housing halves together at the front and on top of the handle.

The front of the motor housing carries the rating label, an orange paper label. On it, a white hexagon holds a black circle with B&D in white letters, followed by Black & Decker in bold, slanted upper and lowercase lettering, then FINISHING SANDER, the model, electrical ratings, patent numbers, a UL Listed mark and CAUTION text in black. Along the bottom, a dark olive band carries DOUBLE INSULATED and the Towson, Md. and Made in Canada lines in white capitals. Of the patents listed, the newest, 3,871,069, falls in the US patent number range issued in 1975, so this label likely dates from the mid to late 1970s.

On this copy: no measurements were taken. The label is torn and scuffed so that the first letter of FINISHING, parts of the model number and the type number are missing, and parts of the patent numbers are worn. Elsewhere, the housing is dirty with sanding dust, scratches and brown staining on one side, the name MIKE is scratched into the front of the base, and the orange cord and plug are present.

About the Black & Decker No. 7404 Finishing Sander

What year is my Black & Decker 7404 finishing sander?
