Vintage Red One Gallon Metal Safety Can with Square Strap Handle, Hook Trigger Lever and Spring Spout Cap
A vintage red one gallon Type I style safety can of galvanized steel, with a round body divided by two rolled ribs, a domed top and a short offset spout under a spring-loaded self-closing round cap. A flat steel strap bent into a tall squared U forms the carry handle, and a separate red rod lever bent like a hook sits inside it, linked to a hinged cam that lifts the cap. No label, decal, embossing or maker stamp remains, so the maker is unidentified. The best comparisons are vintage Justrite, Eagle and Protectoseal cans.

What a safety can is
A Type I safety can has a single opening that is both the fill and the pour spout, closed by a spring-loaded cap that opens only while the trigger is held. Companies such as Justrite, Eagle and Protectoseal made them for shops and garages storing gasoline and solvents. With its label gone, this can's maker cannot be named.
Red ribbed can with a square handle and a hook lever that lifts the cap
This red one gallon safety can is a squat round metal can with a domed top, a short round spout offset to one side, and a tall square carry handle. Its galvanized steel is painted red, a true fire-engine red that has dulled to a brick red. Wherever the paint is gone, the silver-gray galvanized metal shows. Two rolled ribs divide the straight sides into three bands, and the top dome and the base are joined to the body with rolled seams.
The carry handle is a flat steel strap bent into a tall squared U, fixed to the top of the can beside the spout. Inside the handle sits a separate trigger lever, a round steel rod bent into a hook or shepherd's crook shape, also painted red. A short horizontal rod connects the lever to a hinged linkage and cam on the back of the spout. Squeezing the lever lifts the round domed spout cap; release it and a spring snaps the cap shut. That self-closing cap is the feature that makes this a Type I style safety can for gasoline and solvents. A small hex nut and stud sit on the top near the base of the handle.
The bottom is flat, painted red, and set inside a rolled rim. No embossing, stamped maker name, model number or Underwriters Laboratories label was seen on the bottom, sides, handle or spout cap. Whatever decal or label the can once had is gone.
On this copy: not measured; sold as one gallon. Paint loss is heavy on the top dome and spout cap. Elsewhere there are scattered chips down the sides, dark grease or oil stains, and a thick layer of dust and grime on the top. The lever, linkage and cap are all present. No dents or rust-through were seen.

About the Red One Gallon Safety Can
What is a red metal can with a lever that lifts the lid?
It is a safety can for gasoline or solvents. The lever opens a spring-loaded cap that closes on its own when you let go, which limits spills and fumes.
Who made this vintage safety can?
Unknown. The label or decal that would name the maker is gone, and no stamp was found. Justrite, Eagle and Protectoseal are the best known makers to compare against.
How do I identify an old safety can?
Look for a paper or metal label, an Underwriters Laboratories number, or a name stamped on the bottom or spout cap. If none survives, compare the handle, trigger and cap linkage with marked examples, since each maker used its own mechanism.
