About this item

A craft-store doll, crocheted into a bed doll

This vintage vinyl sleep eye doll in a handmade crocheted "Princess" gown started life as a craft doll: a cheap, undressed doll sold in a plastic bag wearing only nylon panties, socks and shoes, meant for the buyer to dress. She has a tan vinyl head with long black rooted hair, blue sleep eyes that close when she's laid back, and a lighter peach body. Her nylon knit panties, white mesh socks and white plastic shoes are the clothes she was sold in. Everything else was made at home.

Craft dolls like this were sold by craft suppliers and chains such as Darice, Fibre-Craft and Hobby Lobby. A Darice example in the Virtual Black Doll Museum, dated about the 1980s to 1990s, is marked "China" on the head and "Made in China" on the upper back, the same place this doll's mark is. A sealed Hobby Lobby bag of the same type, a "13 inch Craft Girl Doll" with black hair, item 53367A/3045, was "Manufactured for Hobby Lobby Stores, Oklahoma City" in China and priced $2.97. That doll has the same tan head, peach body, chubby legs and nylon underwear, but brown eyes and dark brows, so it isn't this exact doll.

Crocheters turned many of these dolls into bed dolls: a doll in a wide ruffled gown, made to sit on a made bed or pillow with the skirt fanned out around her. Fibre-Craft sold bed doll and pillow doll crochet leaflets for its dolls in the late 1980s. This gown, in cream yarn with puffed sleeves, a tiered skirt with ruffled edges, blue satin ribbon roses and a pearl button at the back, is that kind of work. The gold satin sash was lettered PRINCESS by hand.

One other copy of this doll turned up for sale in October 2026, with the same face, blue starburst eyes, coral lips, chubby legs and white shoes, and brown hair. Its gown is the same style in coral and cream, with blue roses and a button back, so both gowns likely came from one published pattern. Neither doll carries a company name, and the face mold couldn't be matched to a maker.

Detailed visual description

Blue sleep eyes, black hair and a cream crochet ball gown

The doll has a tan (warm caramel) vinyl head with long, wavy black rooted hair and a thin gold cord across the top. Her blue sleep eyes have ridged starburst irises, dark pupils and black lashes set on the lids; when she lies back the lids close and show a pale pink color. Thin, single-stroke orange-brown brows arch high above the eyes, over a small button nose and a closed, smiling mouth in glossy coral orange. The body is a lighter peach than the head, with arms molded in a slight bend, open hands and chubby toddler legs.

The gown is cream (ivory) acrylic yarn crochet: a round neck, a fitted bodice, long puffed sleeves with deep cuffs, and a very full skirt in flounced tiers with ruffled, scalloped edges. Blue satin ribbon roses with green ribbon leaves sit on one sleeve and around the skirt. A gold satin ribbon at the waist is lettered PRINCESS in black capitals by hand, and a pearl bead button closes the back.

  • Face: blue starburst sleep eyes with lashes, orange brows, coral lips.
  • Hair: black, rooted, long and wavy, with a thin gold cord.
  • Back: pearl button at the neck of the gown; "MADE IN CHINA" in raised capitals running down the upper back.
  • Underneath: ivory nylon knit panties with a picot edge, white mesh socks, white plastic shoes with gray soles.
  • This copy: frizzy hair, a small pale scuff at the right temple, light yellowing and a few brown spots on the gown, fraying sock tops. The eyes open and close.

Questions

About the Sleep Eye Doll in Crocheted Princess Gown

Who made this doll?

It isn't marked beyond "Made in China" and couldn't be traced. It's an undressed craft doll of the kind Darice, Fibre-Craft and Hobby Lobby sold in plastic bags for people to dress at home.

What is a craft doll?

An inexpensive doll sold wearing only nylon panties, socks and shoes, meant to be dressed by the buyer. Many were crocheted into bed dolls, whose wide skirts spread over a bed or pillow.

How old is it?

Probably 1980s to 1990s. China-marked craft dolls in museum and catalog records date to then, and Fibre-Craft published its bed doll crochet patterns in 1986 to 1989. Nothing on the doll is dated.

Is the gown original?

It's handmade, crocheted for the doll by whoever bought it. Only the panties, socks and shoes came with the doll. A second doll with the same face wears the same gown style in coral and cream, so the gown likely follows a shared pattern.

Why does the sash say Princess?

The maker of the gown lettered it by hand in black on gold satin ribbon. It isn't a brand or a doll name from a company.

What is it worth?

Little. On October 29, 2026, the one matching doll asked $13.40 delivered, and similar crocheted craft and bed dolls asked about $10 to $61 delivered. These are asking prices, not sales.
