About this sculpture

A cowboy-artist scene of a trapper fighting a mountain lion

This Lion and Trapper bronze shows a bearded trapper in a fur cap on a rearing horse. He has his rifle raised by the barrel to club a mountain lion that is climbing the rock toward the horse's front legs. The brass plaque on the green marble base credits the design to C.M. Russell.

Charles Marion Russell was born in St. Louis in 1864, went to Montana at 16, and spent the rest of his life there, mostly near Great Falls. He made about 4,000 works, including paintings, drawings and small models in wax and clay, and some of those models were cast in bronze. His original bronzes are prized: Buffalo Hunt sold for $4.1 million in 2008.

We found no record of a Russell original by this name in museum collections or major auction results. Every example on record is a later casting sold under Russell's name, in sizes from about 13 to 18 inches. One eBay seller lists the model as a licensed reproduction, and auction houses in Montana and New Hampshire have sold it as a decorative bronze, not as a Russell original.

How it's dated: there is no date, foundry stamp or country label on this piece, so the date comes from its format. Western bronze copies on green marble bases with engraved brass title plaques were sold in large numbers in the late 20th century. Auction houses catalog this exact format as late 20th century recasts, and a seller dates a marble-base copy of Remington's Mountain Man to the 1980s. An Antiques Roadshow appraiser also noted that original Russell and Remington bronzes were not mounted on marble. Taken together, this piece was most likely made between the 1970s and the 1990s.

Detailed visual description

A trapper on a rearing horse swinging his rifle at a climbing mountain lion

The Lion and Trapper bronze after C.M. Russell stands about a foot and a half tall on a rectangular green marble base. A bearded trapper in a fur cap and fringed buckskins rides a horse rearing on a rocky ledge. He holds the reins in one hand and swings a rifle overhead by the barrel with the other. A mountain lion climbs up the rock face below, snarling, with its forepaws against the horse's raised front legs and its long tail curling down past the base.

A bronze of a cowboy or mountain man on a rearing horse fighting a mountain lion, on green marble with a brass plaque, is this piece.

  • Rider: bearded trapper in a fur cap and fringed buckskin shirt and leggings, with a powder horn and pouch, rifle raised high by the barrel.
  • Horse: rearing on its hind legs with ears back and tail flared, wearing a bridle with strip-metal reins.
  • Lion: a mountain lion climbing the rock, mouth open in a snarl, front paws on the horse's legs, tail hanging below the base line.
  • Rockwork: rough, deeply textured rock base that rises to a ledge under the horse.
  • Patina: dark chocolate brown with copper and gold tones rubbed through on the lion, the horse's head and the high points.
  • Base: rectangular green marble block with white veining and a brass plaque on the front.
  • This copy: a loose white thread is caught on the rock near the base, the marble has a small chip on one corner, and the plaque has light spotting. Dust in the recesses. The reins and rifle are intact.

Questions

About the Lion and Trapper bronze

Is the Lion and Trapper bronze an original Charles Russell?

No. Russell died in 1926, and we found no record of an original Russell bronze by this name. Every example on record is a later casting, and one eBay seller lists it as a licensed reproduction.

How old is it?

Most likely 1970s to 1990s. It has no date or foundry mark, but green marble bases with engraved brass title plaques are the format of late 20th century western bronze reproductions, and auction houses date pieces in this format to that period.

How big is it?

Copies of this model range from about 13 to 18 inches tall. The 18 inch version is about 11 inches wide on a 6 3/4 by 4 3/4 inch base and weighs about 19 pounds.

Is it real bronze?

Most of these are cast bronze, and they're heavy for their size. A magnet won't stick to bronze. Light, hollow-sounding copies may be cast resin or white metal with a bronze finish.

What is it worth?

A 13 inch version sold for $350 plus buyer's premium at NH Auctions & Appraisals in November 2024, and Davis Brothers Auction estimated a 16 inch one at $350 to $500 in 2022. eBay sellers asked $465 to $750 in 2026. Condition of the reins, rifle and lion's tail matters most.
