Vintage Cream Glazed Pottery Pig Figurine with Pink Airbrushing, Big Head and Painted Eyes

Quick identification

This is a vintage slip-cast pottery pig figurine in glossy cream glaze with soft rose-pink airbrushing on the head, ears, cheeks, chest and hips. It has an oversized round head turned to one side, upright pointed ears, large solid black painted eyes, a raised snout with red nostrils, a small painted mouth and a knob tail. Its feet are unglazed, and the joined hind feet have an open casting hole. With no marks, it is unidentified and the maker is unknown. The airbrushed cream-and-pink style resembles 1940s to 1950s American novelty pottery, but no matching mold has been confirmed.

Help identify this pig

We have not found the maker of this pig. The cream glaze with sprayed pink accents, painted eyes and open, unglazed base are traits shared by many mid-century American novelty pottery makers, but no matching mold has been found yet. Detailed visual description

Cream piglet with pink airbrushed spots and a big round head

This vintage cream pottery pig figurine with pink airbrushing is a standing piglet in a cute, cartoon-like style, with an oversized round head turned slightly to its left, upright pointed ears, a short rounded body and stubby legs. It is hollow, slip-cast earthenware under a glossy glaze. Cream, a warm off-white, is the base color. The accent color is pink, a soft rose pink sprayed on with an airbrush so the edges fade into the cream.

The pink airbrushing sits on the crown and back of the head, inside both ears, on the cheeks, across the chest and front legs, and in a round patch on each hip. On the face are large solid black painted eyes set in molded sockets, a raised round snout with two small nostrils in red, a dark raspberry shade, and a small painted open mouth in the same red. Molded curved lines on the front legs are picked out in pink. At the back is a small rounded knob of a tail set high on the rump. It is not curly.

Underneath, the body is glazed but the four feet are left unglazed (dry footed), showing a cream colored clay body. The two hind feet are joined into one pad with a large open, peanut-shaped hole into the hollow body, typical of slip-cast figurines. No stamp, incised mark, paper label or sticker appears on the base or anywhere else.

On this copy: it stands about 5 to 6 inches tall, judged against an adult hand (not measured). Ears, snout, tail and all four legs are intact, with no chips, cracks or repairs visible. A few small dark specks and a pin-size spot near the left ear look like glaze or kiln flaws. Elsewhere: a light gray smudge at the back of the neck, pink overspray specks on the unglazed feet, and dirt on the feet.

Questions

About the Pink Airbrushed Pottery Pig Figurine

How do I identify an unmarked pottery pig figurine?

Check the feet and base for an incised number, a stamp or the outline of a lost paper label, then compare the exact mold (head angle, ears, tail and leg lines) with marked examples. This pig has no mark, so it can only be matched by mold.

Why does my ceramic pig have a hole in the bottom?

Hollow figurines are made by pouring liquid clay (slip) into a plaster mold. The opening lets the extra slip drain out and lets air escape during firing, so it is a sign of how it was made, not damage.

Is the pink on my pig painted or glazed?

The soft pink fading into the cream was sprayed on with an airbrush and sealed under the glaze. Overspray specks of pink can be seen on the unglazed feet.
