Two from a four-piece eagle canister set
These ceramic eagle and shield canisters are the Sugar and the Coffee from a four-piece kitchen set of Flour, Sugar, Coffee and Tea. Each is a round canister with fluted, column-like sides. A raised banner on the front holds an American eagle with spread wings over a striped shield, above a scrolled plaque that names what goes inside. A complete set of four listed in October 2026 shows how the set is sized: Flour and Sugar are the tall pair, and Coffee and Tea are a shorter pair. That matches this Sugar standing well above its Coffee.
The design was made in more than one brown glaze. This pair is a glossy amber with darker brown pooling in the flutes and around the raised details. The full set for sale is a lighter golden amber, and a Sugar and Flour pair is a deep chocolate brown. Every version has the same molded details: the eagle and lettering picked out in dark brown, the beaded band around the foot, the beaded lid edge and the tall eight-sided knob.
No maker has been traced. The bottoms of this pair are flat, unglazed and unmarked, and so are those of the chocolate brown pair. None of the sellers names a company. Three separate sellers date the canisters to the 1970s. The eagle and shield was a favorite motif of the 1976 Bicentennial, and the Ford Presidential Library notes that many Bicentennial objects "prominently featured the American bald eagle." Still, these canisters carry no 1776 or Bicentennial wording, so that link is a fit, not a fact.
Whether they came from a factory or were poured from a commercial mold in a ceramics studio is still open. Four matching listings in one family of brown glazes lean toward a commercial line, but no catalog, label or box has turned up to settle it.
This design or a lookalike?
Eagle canisters were made by many companies. The shape and the knob tell this one apart. From this pair and listing photos, checked October 29, 2026.
| Version | Marks | Tells | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| This design Golden amber, amber or chocolate brown | None; flat unglazed bottom | Round, fluted sides; eagle and shield on a swallowtail banner; beaded foot and lid edge; tall octagonal knob | Large (Flour, Sugar) about 11½–12 in. with lid; Coffee and Tea shorter |
| Lincoln BeautyWare Japan, lookalike | Lincoln BeautyWare, Japan (per seller) | Rectangular body with side columns and stars; peaked pediment lid with a bar knob; caramel glaze | Tea about 7 in. |
| Other eagle canisters Different designs | Napcoware, Metlox, McCoy, Cheinco and others | White, blue or woodgrain bodies, eagle-head or ball knobs, printed rather than molded eagles | Varies |
- The knob is the quickest tell. A tall eight-sided knob on a flat, beaded lid. It is hollow, with an opening on the underside of the lid.
- The back is plain. Only the front has the banner; the rest of the body is plain fluting.
- No mark. The bottoms are bare, cream-colored unglazed clay. A stamped or labeled bottom means a different maker's canister.
- Lettering: FLOUR, SUGAR, COFFEE and TEA in rustic capitals outlined in dark brown, each in its own scrolled plaque.
Fluted amber canisters with a raised eagle banner
Each canister is a round ceramic cylinder with shallow vertical flutes, glazed in glossy amber (a warm honey brown that runs to dark chocolate where the glaze pools). On the front, a raised banner with swallowtail ends frames an eagle with outspread wings, its head turned to one side, over a striped shield. The details are drawn in dark brown outline. Below the eagle, a scrolled plaque holds SUGAR or COFFEE in rustic capitals.
A raised band of beads circles the foot. The lid is a flat, slightly domed disk with a beaded edge and a tall octagonal knob in mottled amber and brown. Under the lid, the rim where it rests on the canister is left unglazed, and the knob is hollow with a hole into it from underneath. The inside of each canister is glazed in swirling amber and dark brown.
- Front: raised banner with eagle and shield over a name plaque.
- Sides and back: plain vertical fluting.
- Foot: raised beaded band.
- Lid: beaded edge, tall octagonal knob, unglazed underside rim, hollow knob.
- Inside: glazed, mottled amber and dark brown.
- Bottom: flat, unglazed cream clay, no mark or mold number.
- This copy: crazing over the whole glaze with dirt trapped in the cracks, small glaze flakes on the lid edges and knobs, and stained, dirty bottoms. No large chips show in the photos.
Sugar canister: SUGAR Coffee canister: COFFEE Rest of the set (from listings): FLOUR TEANo maker's mark, date or mold number appears anywhere on this pair.

Who made the eagle and shield ceramic canisters?
No one has been traced. Every copy whose bottom has been shown is unglazed and unmarked, and no seller names a maker.
How many canisters are in the set?
Four: Flour and Sugar in a large size, Coffee and Tea in a smaller size. A complete set of four was listed in October 2026.
How old are they?
Three separate sellers date them to the 1970s. The eagle and shield fits the patriotic decor around the 1976 Bicentennial, but the canisters carry no date or Bicentennial wording.
What colors were they made in?
Brown glazes only so far: a light golden amber, a middle amber with dark brown pooling like this pair, and a dark chocolate brown.
How big are they?
One seller's ruler shows the large size at about 11½ to 12 inches tall to the top of the knob. The Coffee and Tea canisters are noticeably shorter.
Is the Lincoln BeautyWare eagle set the same thing?
No. Lincoln BeautyWare's Japanese set has a similar eagle, shield and caramel glaze, but the canisters are rectangular with side columns and a peaked pediment lid. These are round and fluted with an octagonal knob.
What are eagle canisters like these worth?
On October 29, 2026, single canisters asked $15 plus shipping, a Sugar and Flour pair asked $49, and a set of four asked $72.99. These are asking prices, not sales.
