Corning's 2 quart square in the 1977 Wildflower pattern
The Corning Ware Wildflower A-2-B is the 2 quart square casserole in Corning Ware's Wildflower pattern: a white Pyroceram dish ringed with red-orange poppies, yellow daisies, small blue flowers and a pink bloom on green stems. Corning Glass Works of Corning, New York, made it, and the town is printed in the backstamp under one handle. Its matching cover is the clear Pyrex A-9-C lid with a round knob, the same lid that fits the 3 quart A-3-B. Corning's own boxes for it carry the number A-2-7 and name it two ways, an older box calling it a "2-QT. COVERED SAUCEPAN" and a later one a "2-QT./2 L COVERED CASSEROLE" with a Corning Microwave logo.
Corning Ware began with a lab accident in the early 1950s. Corning chemist S. Donald Stookey was heating a photosensitive glass when the furnace overshot from 600°C to 900°C, and the plate came out milky white and survived a drop to the floor without shattering. That glass-ceramic became Pyroceram, first used for missile nose cones, and in 1958 Corning put it into cookware as Corning Ware. Wheat, the first pattern, sold poorly and gave way to Blue Cornflower, which stood for the brand for about thirty years. The selling point was heat, since a Pyroceram dish can go from the refrigerator to the stove, or from the freezer into a hot oven, without breaking.
Wildflower arrived in 1977. Corningware 411, a long-running collector reference, gives its run as 1977 to 1984, while Hunker and many sellers say 1985, and a Wildflower A-2-B with the raised stamp Corning used from about 1985 points to the later date. The pattern went well beyond casseroles, and Corningware 411's list of known Wildflower pieces runs from petite dishes, Menuette saucepans and a skillet to a teapot, percolators, open roasters, aluminum-bottomed Rangetoppers, Fast Food microwave dishes and the glass Counter Saver cutting board. Corelle sold matching Wildflower dinnerware, and Replacements lists Corelle Wildflower bowls with a Centura mark. In Corning's pattern numbering Wildflower is number 7, which is where the box code A-2-7 comes from.
The model number reads in parts. A is the A-series, the square Corning Ware Corning made from 1972 with straighter sides, wider handles and bigger lid knobs, and the 2 is the size in quarts. According to a commenter on Corningware 411, the trailing B means the bowl or bottom dish and lids end in C for cover, as in A-9-C, while a plastic cover such as the A-2-PC adds a P. Corningware 411 files the A-2-B under Basic Cookware as a 2 quart saucepan that takes the detachable A-10-HG handle, which explains why the earlier box says saucepan.
This copy has the printed block backstamp in gray capitals under one handle, ending RANGE - OVEN - MICROWAVE and CORNING, NY USA. Corningware 411 dates that stamp on square Corning Ware from 1979 or 1980 to about 1985, so this casserole was most likely made in those years. Its clear knobbed lid has the A-9-C shape, though no photo shows the code on the lid. The A-2-B is one of the easiest Wildflower pieces to find, with about 150 live eBay listings for a single dish on October 29, 2026.
Which Wildflower square is it?
The handle stamp settles the size, and the kind of stamp dates it. From this copy, Corningware 411's stamp guide and listing photos, checked October 29, 2026.
| Version | Marks | Tells | Size |
|---|---|---|---|
| A-2-B, printed stamp This copy | Gray printed "- CORNING WARE ® - / A-2-B 2 QUART / RANGE - OVEN - MICROWAVE / CORNING, NY USA" under one handle, sometimes with a number and MA after USA | Block stamp, about 1979/80 to 1985/86 on square pieces | 2 quart |
| A-2-B, raised stamp Later copies | Raised "CORNING WARE®" under one handle and "A-2-B 2 LITER" under the other | Embossed stamp, about 1985 to 1999, no RANGE - OVEN - MICROWAVE line | 2 liter |
| A-2-B in the box New old stock | Box reads "WILDFLOWER CORNING WARE" and A-2-7 | Older box: "2-QT. COVERED SAUCEPAN". Later box: "2-QT./2 L COVERED CASSEROLE" with a Corning Microwave MW logo | 2 quart |
| A-3-B Lookalike | "A-3-B" on the handle | Same A-9-C lid, deeper dish | 3 quart |
| A-1-B and A-1 1/2-B Lookalikes | "A-1-B" or "A-1 1/2-B" on the handle | Smaller square, takes the A-1-C lid, which sellers also pair with the Pyrex A-7-C | 1 and 1½ quart |
| Stoneware CorningWare 2001 on | Usually no model number, one-word CorningWare | Unglazed ring on the bottom, not for stovetop use | Varies |
- Read the handle, not the title. Sellers list 1½ and 3 quart Wildflower dishes as A-2-B, and the stamp under the handle is the only sure size.
- Printed or raised. A printed stamp with RANGE - OVEN - MICROWAVE dates a square to about 1979 to 1985, and raised letters reading 2 LITER mean about 1985 or later.
- The lid won't decide it. The A-9-C fits both the A-2-B and the A-3-B, so a lid that fits doesn't prove the size.
- Smooth bottom. Vintage Pyroceram is glazed all over the base, while later stoneware has a bare ring from the kiln.
- MA numbers. Some printed stamps end with a number and MA, such as 180MA or 1182MA, and Corningware 411 says no one has worked out what they mean.
A white square casserole with a band of poppies and wildflowers
The Wildflower A-2-B is a white square dish with rounded corners and gently sloped sides, about 8½ inches square, about 10 inches across its two flat tab handles and about 2½ inches tall, by sellers' measurements. The body is glossy, slightly warm white Pyroceram. A painted band runs low on the outside wall: two large red-orange poppies (a true poppy red going to orange) with yellow centers, small yellow daisies with orange centers, clusters of tiny sky-blue flowers, and at one end a soft pink bloom beside a thin curling vine drawn in dark outline, all joined by green leaves and stems. The photos show the band on the front and on one side, and the inside is plain glossy white.
The lid is clear glass, square with rounded corners to match the dish, slightly domed, with a raised round disk in the middle and a solid round knob on a short stem. The backstamp sits on the underside of one handle, printed in small gray block capitals, set off by dashes on either side of the brand name.
- Front: two big red-orange poppies near the center of the band, with yellow daisies, blue clusters and the pink bloom and vine at the left end.
- Sides: the same floral band continues on at least one side, low on the wall.
- Handles: plain white tab handles on two opposite sides, each with a shallow recess underneath.
- Inside: plain glossy white, no decoration.
- Lid: clear glass, rounded square, domed, raised center disk, round glass knob.
- Base: smooth, fully glazed white, with no foot ring and no markings.
- Marks: printed backstamp under one handle with the brand, model, size, uses and Corning, N.Y.
- This copy: fine gray-brown branching lines on the outer wall below the stamped handle and along two edges of the base, a roundish gray smudge in the middle of the base and a few dark specks. They look like the metal marks collectors describe, though the photos can't show whether they scrub off. No chips show in the photos, though the end of the stamp's last line is lost in glare and the lid's code isn't shown.
- CORNING WARE ® - A-2-B 2 QUART RANGE - OVEN - MICROWAVE CORNING , NY.US[A, rest hidden by glare]Other copies with this stamp end the last line with a number and MA, such as "CORNING, N.Y. U.S.A 180MA."

Cooking with it, and cleaning the gray marks
- Stovetop: the Pyroceram dish works on gas, electric coil and radiant glass-top burners, according to Corningware 411, which advises medium heat on modern ranges. It doesn't work on induction because it isn't metal.
- The lid is different glass. Most Corning Ware lids are Pyrex borosilicate or tempered soda-lime glass, which handle sudden heat far worse than the dish. Keep the lid off burners and out of the broiler, though it is fine in the oven.
- Gray marks: Pyroceram is harder than metal, so spoons, racks and pans rub gray metal onto it. Corningware 411 cleaned a skillet covered in marks that "almost looks like it is cracked all over" with Bar Keepers Friend, and readers there also suggest Bon Ami, baking soda paste and Weiman's cooktop cleaner. Hunker recommends Bar Keepers Friend or a glass cooktop cleaner too.
- Dishwasher: painted patterns can wear with machine washing, Corningware 411 warns, so hand washing keeps the flowers bright.

What years was Corning Ware Wildflower made?
Wildflower came out in 1977. Corningware 411 ends the run in 1984, while Hunker and many sellers say 1985, and Wildflower squares with the raised stamp Corning used from about 1985 do turn up.
What lid fits a Corning Ware A-2-B?
The Pyrex A-9-C glass lid, which also fits the 3 quart A-3-B, and the A-2-PC plastic cover fits as well. The A-7-C that sellers pair with the 1 quart A-1-B is the smaller size.
What does A-2-B mean on Corning Ware?
A is the A-series, Corning's square cookware from 1972 on, and 2 is the size in quarts. B marks the dish itself, the bowl or bottom, and the matching lids end in C for cover.
Can Wildflower Corning Ware go on the stove?
The dish can. Vintage Pyroceram is marked RANGE - OVEN - MICROWAVE and works on gas, electric coil and glass-top ranges at medium heat, though not on induction. The glass lid must never sit on a burner or go under the broiler.
What are the gray lines on the bottom of my Corning Ware?
Usually metal marks. Pyroceram is harder than metal, so utensils and oven racks leave gray metal on the surface, and the lines can look like cracks. Corningware 411 scrubbed a skillet that looked cracked all over back to like new with Bar Keepers Friend. A line that stays after a good scrub is a different matter and worth a close look under light.
What is a Corning Ware Wildflower 2 quart casserole worth?
On October 29, 2026, about 150 live eBay listings for a single Wildflower A-2-B asked $5.99 to $300, with half at $21 or less and most between $17 and $28 before shipping. A new-in-box copy asked $59.99, and all of these are asking prices, not sales.
How can I tell vintage Corning Ware from newer CorningWare?
Vintage Pyroceram carries an A- or P- model number and has a smooth, fully glazed bottom. The stoneware CorningWare sold from 2001 usually has no model number and an unglazed ring under the base, and it is not for stovetop use.
