Carhartt's washed duck work vest, dated to the month by its tag
The Carhartt V02 DKB is the Sandstone Duck Vest with an Arctic quilt lining in Dark Brown, one of the most common Carhartt work vests. Its shell is 12-ounce, 100% cotton sandstone duck, a canvas washed so it starts out softer and wears to the faded, chalky brown seen here. Inside, a nylon lining is quilted to arctic-weight polyester insulation. Retail descriptions add a brass front zipper with an inside storm flap, two large lower front pockets, an inside pocket with a hook-and-loop closure, a drop tail at the back and triple-stitched main seams, with a back length of about 27¼ inches on a Large Regular.
Carhartt was founded in Detroit in 1889 by Hamilton Carhartt to make work clothes for manual laborers, under the slogan "Honest value for an honest dollar," and it is still a private, family-owned company. Its headquarters is now in Dearborn, Michigan, the P.O. Box 600, Dearborn, MI 48121 address on this tag. The company also ran its own factories in Mexico, four of them in two states employing about 2,000 people as of 2003, and closed its Mexico plants in 2023.
This copy was made in December 2007. Carhartt care tags carry a production code read as month then year, and on this tag the long number printed under RN# 14806 starts with 1207. Other V02 tags in the same layout bear that out, with 0604 on a copy sold as 2004, 0306 on one sold as 2006, and 1210 on one sold as 2010. That makes this vest about 19 years old in 2026, newer than the Made in USA union-label V02s of the early 2000s.
The tag reads "Made in Mexico (with Mexican and U.S.A. components)," the same wording as the March 2006 copy, while by December 2010 the wording had changed to "Made in Mexico from USA components." V02 vests also come in many other colors, and the V02 was still in Carhartt catalogs in 2018 and 2020 before at least one retailer marked it discontinued.
This copy is a 3XL Regular with heavy, even fading across the shoulders and back, worn and frayed edges, and small holes near the zipper and the top of the left pocket.

- Read the first four digits under the RN. They're the month and year, so 1207 is December 2007, and the rest of the line isn't a date.
- Check the color code. DKB is Dark Brown, and listings also show BRN, CHT, MOS (Moss), MDT (Midnight), SPC, BLK, CLY and numeric codes such as 211 and 029.
- Look inside the collar. The V02 has a quilted black or navy nylon lining, so fleece or sherpa means a different style.
- Fakes are not a known problem for this vest. A real tag shows RN# 14806, the Carhartt address, a date code and the V02 style line with a color code and size in three languages.
A faded dark brown duck vest with a black knit collar and quilted lining
The V02 is a sleeveless, hip-length vest in sandstone cotton duck. In Dark Brown the canvas starts as a deep chocolate brown and fades unevenly to a lighter cocoa (brown with a gray cast), most along the shoulders, the back and the pocket edges. A black rib-knit collar stands up around the neck and a brass zipper runs the full front. The armholes are bound in the same duck, and the black quilted lining shows at the armholes and the hem.
Two large patch pockets sit low on the front, cut with slanted top openings that leave a pointed flap of fabric at the outer corners. The wearer's left pocket carries the small square Carhartt patch, a dark brown leather-look square with the C logo and carhartt in small lowercase, and the back is a plain panel with a slightly longer drop tail.
- Front: brass full zip, two lower pockets, Carhartt square patch on the wearer's left pocket.
- Back: plain duck panel with a drop tail, no logo.
- Collar: black rib-knit stand collar.
- Lining: black nylon quilted in large diamonds.
- Tag: white care tag at the neck, topped by a woven label with an orange-yellow C logo over carhartt in dark red lowercase letters.
- This copy: 3XL Regular, with strong fading across the shoulders and back, small light spots on the front, fraying along the zipper placket, small holes near the zipper and the top corner of the left pocket, and worn edges on the pockets and hem.
