A licensed JH Design fan jacket from the Kobe and Shaq years onward
This JH Design Los Angeles Lakers black twill snap jacket is an NBA-licensed fan jacket in the style sellers call a "NASCAR" or racing jacket: a heavy cotton-look twill shell covered in embroidered patches, a knit collar, cuffs and waistband, and a full snap front. A big gold LAKERS script runs across the chest, the Lakers ball logo sits on the left chest and fills the back, and the sleeves carry gold panels lettered LOS ANGELES and LAKERS, an NBA Western Conference patch and the team's purple L logo. It is not a varsity letterman jacket, though it is often listed as one.
JH Design is a Los Angeles company that makes licensed jackets for the NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and NASCAR. Business directories list it as JH Design Group at 940 West Washington Boulevard in Los Angeles and name Jeff Hamilton as its founder, but they disagree on the year, with 1987 on one and 1988 on another, while a presidential library record gives 1998 for a company called JH Design. Hamilton is the designer credited with popularizing the NBA championship leather jacket after he left a Guess menswear license in 1986. The label here reads JH Design, not Jeff Hamilton, and this is a mass-market twill jacket, not one of his hand-embroidered leather pieces.
None of the tags carries a date, so the logos do the work. The purple L over a gold ball on the left forearm is the Lakers alternate logo that came out with the white alternate uniform in the 2002-03 season, so the jacket can't be older than that. The Western Conference patch, a red WESTERN banner across a basketball, is the conference logo the league used from 1993-94 through 2016-17, which points to a jacket made before the 2017-18 change. JH Design's current Lakers lineup, checked October 29, 2026, has a black-and-purple split cotton twill jacket but not this design. So this one dates to somewhere between 2002 and about 2017, and the tags can't narrow it further. Sellers usually call these jackets "vintage" or "Y2K," but no maker record confirms the year.
The design came as a team series, and a Chicago Bulls jacket built on the same pattern, with BULLS across the chest, CHICAGO and BULLS sleeve panels and an NBA Eastern Conference patch, was listed on Mercari in October 2026. JH Design also made a second black Lakers twill jacket with the same patches and labels but gold-and-white knit trim and plain sleeve stripes with no lettering.
This copy is a size L with the original NBA and JH Design neck label, a separate MADE IN CHINA tag and all its patches. Only one other exact copy turned up for sale on October 29, 2026, a 3XL on eBay.

- Check the left forearm. The purple L over a gold ball first appeared in 2002-03, so any copy with it is from then or later.
- Check the conference patch. The red WESTERN banner over a ball is the 1993-94 to 2016-17 logo, while the newer stacked WESTERN CONFERENCE logo means a later jacket.
- Look at the snaps. On the 3XL listed on eBay, the silver snaps are stamped JH DESIGN, LOS ANGELES and U.S.A. around a JH monogram.
- Jeff Hamilton is a different label. Leather and wool jackets signed Jeff Hamilton, such as the championship jackets with year patches, are a separate, pricier line.
A black twill snap jacket with gold LAKERS script and lettered gold sleeve panels
The jacket is solid black (true black) in a ribbed twill, cut like a stadium jacket with a straight body, a knit stand collar, knit cuffs and a knit waistband, all black with two white stripes. It closes with a full row of silver snaps down a placket. Across the chest runs LAKERS in the team's slanted script, with tall, tapering gold (golden yellow) letters outlined in white, the L sweeping under the rest of the word.
Above the script on the left chest is the Lakers ball logo: a gold (yellow) basketball with LOS ANGELES in small purple capitals over LAKERS in purple italic capitals with speed lines trailing left. The same logo, much larger, fills the back. Each upper sleeve has a wide gold panel edged in white running from the shoulder toward the elbow, lettered in black serif capitals, LOS ANGELES on the right sleeve and LAKERS on the left.
