An unmarked shaggy donkey with a lot of character
This unmarked shaggy sitting donkey figurine has no maker's mark, label or date anywhere on it, so this page describes it in detail to help anyone who owns one find it and add what they know.
The donkey sits with its front legs straight out and its back legs tucked, head tipped down and to one side. Big floppy ears, heavy eyelids and a long, smooth muzzle give it a sad, sleepy look. Its whole body is covered in deep, wavy grooves that look like shaggy fur.
Textured animal figures in a matte, stone-like finish were popular gift-shop pieces in the 1970s through the 1990s, and the style here fits that period. Lines such as United Design's Stone Critters made animals with a similar look, but nothing on this piece links it to any maker, so the maker and date are not confirmed.
Description and condition from the owner's photos. The style comparison is general and does not identify the maker.
A tan shaggy donkey sitting with floppy ears, a ropy mane and gray hooves
The unmarked shaggy sitting donkey figurine is a small, hand-sized tan donkey sitting on its haunches with both front legs reaching forward. The fur is shown as deep, wavy, scratched-in grooves all over the body. The head is large for the body and tilts to one side, with two long floppy ears (one up, one drooping), half-closed eyes under heavy lids, a tuft of forelock between the ears, and a long, smooth, rounded muzzle with two nostrils. A thick ropy mane runs down the back of the neck, and a curled, rope-like tail wraps around one hip. All four hooves are dark gray.
