About this item

A Hummel girl and her goat, painted in 1980

Goebel Hummel #182 Good Friends is an M.I. Hummel figurine of a country girl in a polka-dot head scarf, sitting on a grassy mound with a small bunch of flowers in her lap while a young white goat leans in beside her. Its German name is "Gute Freunde." Dealers credit the sculpt to Arthur Moeller, one of Goebel's master sculptors, and most date it to 1946. One seller calls it a 1948 design. Either way it was in production early: a copy listed in October 2026 carries an incised crown and a "U.S. Zone Germany" stamp, a mark Goebel used only from 1946 to 1948.

Like every Hummel, it comes from the drawings of Sister Maria Innocentia Hummel (Berta Hummel, 1909–1946), a Franciscan nun at the Siessen convent in Bad Saulgau whose pictures of country children sold as postcards. Franz Goebel got sole rights from the convent to turn them into figurines, shown at the 1935 Leipzig Trade Fair. If 1946 is right, Good Friends was sculpted in the last year of her life. She died of tuberculosis that November, at 37. The maker, W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik, was founded in 1871 by Franz Detleff Goebel and his son William in Oeslau (now Rödental) near Coburg, and it made Hummels until September 30, 2008.

Good Friends came in one size, marked plain "182." In 1953 Moeller also used the figure on a table lamp, Hum 228 "Good Friends," made only in a 7½-inch size. The figurine stayed in the line for decades: October 2026 listings show copies with every mark from the 1940s crown to the 1990s "Germany" mark.

This copy has the blue TMK-6 "Missing Bee" mark, "Goebel" over "W. Germany" with no V or bee, used from 1979 to about 1991. From 1979 Goebel's painters also added the year to their initials, and this one is signed "EL 80," so it was painted in 1980, early in the TMK-6 run. A torn price sticker sits beside the mark.

Detailed visual description

A girl in a polka-dot scarf beside a white goat kid

Hummel 182 shows a little girl seated on a grassy mound. She wears a red-orange head scarf (soft tomato red) with white polka dots, tied under her chin with a matching neckerchief, and a curl of blonde hair shows at her forehead. Her white blouse has full sleeves marked with small blue crescents, under a dark brown bodice and a pale blue skirt crosshatched in dark blue. Orange-red shoes peek out from the hem, and she holds a small bunch of orange-pink flowers in her lap.

The goat kid stands close beside her, on the left as you face it. It is white with gray shading, with small horn buds, upright pointed ears, blue-gray eyes, a smiling mouth and dark hooves. The grassy oval base is pale green and brown, glazed on its edge, with the M.I. Hummel signature pressed into it below the goat. The figures have Goebel's matte, hand-painted finish.

  • Front: girl facing forward holding flowers, goat's head turned to the viewer.
  • Back: the polka-dot scarf knotted at the back of her head, brown bodice and the goat's back and tail.
  • Base edge: incised "M.I. Hummel" signature below the goat, with a pinhole vent in the grass.
  • Bottom: flat glazed white bottom with fine crazing, the blue Goebel W. Germany mark, black "EL 80" and a torn paper price sticker.
  • This copy: dust and lint in the crevices, heaviest on the goat's back, light crazing on the base and bottom glaze, and the torn sticker. No breaks show in the photos.
