About this clock

A West German folding alarm made for travel

This Artco Luminous travel alarm clock folds into its own case. Open the lid and the clock stands up on a hinged brass frame, ready to sit on a hotel nightstand. Close it and the clock lies flat inside a padded square box about the size of a coaster.

Artco is the name on the dial, and the satin lining is stamped Aristocrat with a round A logo. Sellers consistently list these as Aristocrat Artco travel alarms, so Artco appears to be the dial name used on Aristocrat-branded clocks. The dial and movement are marked West Germany and Germany.

"West Germany" was used on goods from the Federal Republic between 1949 and 1990. Sellers date these Artco clocks to the 1950s and 1960s, which fits the design: a mechanical wind-up movement, glow-in-the-dark numerals and a leather-look folding case were typical of travel alarms of that era.

Detailed visual description

A tan folding case with a cream square dial and green glow numerals

The Artco Luminous folding travel alarm clock comes in a square, padded case covered in tan pebble-grain material (a caramel tan with darker mottling) and edged with gold-tone metal bands. Inside, cream satin lines both halves. The clock sits on a gold-tone hinged plate and tilts up when the lid opens. The square cream dial has bold Arabic numerals and hands filled with pale green luminous paint, dots and dashes around the edge, Artco in script above the center, Luminous below, and West Germany in tiny letters at the bottom.
