- Data plates: labels and plates give the maker, model, voltage and often patent numbers.
- Patent numbers: the highest patent number on a label sets the earliest possible date.
- Reproductions: new cast iron often uses modern screws and crisp, sharp casting.
- Labels: missing decals make identification much harder. Photograph any scraps.
